How the Somali Name Generator works
This Somali name generator gives names in the traditional Somali form: a given name followed by the father's name and the grandfather's name, such as Hodan Abdi Warsame or Liban Hassan Jama. It can also add a classic Somali nickname, which many people are known by every day.
How the Somali name generator builds names
Somalis do not use a family surname. A full name is the person's own name, then the father's name, then the paternal grandfather's name, so siblings share the second and third names and a woman keeps her own name after marriage. Because the second and third names are always men's names, every result uses male names in those places. Abroad, the last part is often treated as a surname on official forms.
Somali nicknames
Nicknames, naanays, are a central part of Somali names. They describe a feature or habit: Dheere means tall, Gaab short, Madoobe dark, Cadde light-skinned and Indhacase red-eyed. Some refer to a place or event. A person may be better known by the nickname than by the father's name, and it can appear in place of it in conversation. The nickname option slots one in.

FAQ
Do Somalis have last names?
Traditionally no. A Somali name is given name, father's name and grandfather's name. When a form asks for a surname, the grandfather's name, or sometimes the father's, is usually used.
Why do women's names include men's names?
Because the second and third parts are the father's and grandfather's given names. Hodan Abdi Warsame is Hodan, daughter of Abdi, granddaughter of Warsame, and she keeps that name for life.
What does Dheere mean as a Somali nickname?
Dheere means tall in Somali, and it is one of the most common naanays. Others include Gaab for short, Yarisow for little one and Madoobe for dark, and they are used with affection.
