How the Space Pirate Name Generator works

Space pirate name generator: where the names come from

A space pirate is a pirate with a ship that flies, and the generator names the pirate the way pirates have always been named, with the reputation built into the name. The captain is the one with a title, Captain with a name from the shared cast of this section, Captain Ilsa Marrow, Captain Orin Vasq, Captain Halloran, Captain Okonkwo, or a colour word in the manner of the real Black Bart and Bloody Morgan, Black Tamsin Halloran, Red Sela Onne, Bloody Dorian Ekwueme, Mad Maren Voss, Captain Iron Reyes, or a compound of a colour and a body part, Redhand Vasq, Blackheart Draven, Ironjaw Thorne, Halfhook Petrov, or the epithet, Corvin the Void, Kael the Reaver, Nyx the Widowmaker, Tamsin the Patient, Orin the Unlucky, since a pirate captain's name is a threat before it is a name. The crew name is what the rest of the ship are called, a name and a mark, Nyx One-Eye, Sable Two-Fingers, Jax Three-Ships, Ravi Half-Face, Bram Ironjaw, Petra Longknife, Fenn Loudmouth, or a colour, Bloody Jax, Lucky Ravi, Quiet Petra, Smiling Torin, or the old crew form, Old Ryker, Young Calder, Big Okonkwo, Doc Farrow, Cook Mbeki, since a crew names a person for the thing about them that everyone notices. The pirate ship is named for what she does to people, an adjective and a blade, the Ashen Cutlass, the Silent Sabre, the Hungry Talon, the Rusted Razor, the Black Fang, or the captain's threat, Marrow's Revenge, Vasq's Reckoning, Halloran's Ledger, Draven's Toll, or the threat of a place, the Reckoning of Callix, the Ruin of Thule, or a colour and a carrion bird, the Black Shrike, the Grey Crow, the Red Vulture, the Cold Skua. The pirate crew is the whole company, a place and a crew word, the Kestrine Reavers, the Callix Wreckers, the Cinder Cutters, the Crows of the Belt, the Wolves of the Rim, or a colour, the Black Brethren, the Red Rovers, the Grey Gulls, or the captain's, Vasq's Wolves, Halloran's Jackals, Draven's Rats, or the old mercenary form, the Free Company of Cinder, the Free Company of Ashfall.

Captain gives the one with a title. Crew name gives the rest of the ship. Pirate ship gives what she does to people. Pirate crew gives the whole company.

There is no gender option, since the first names are shared across the crew and a captain is Captain either way.

The lists are original. The first names and surnames are the shared cast of this section, the colours, marks and epithets are built in the manner of the real pirate nicknames, and the ships and crews are coined for this page; no published pirate or franchise name appears in the lists, a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the pirate of the sea rather than the void, the pirate name page; for the ship's honest name before she was taken, the starship name page; for the smuggler who fences what the pirates take, the smuggler name page; for the bounty hunter sent after the captain, the bounty hunter page; and for the fleet that hunts the crew, the fleet name page.
