How the Starship / Spaceship Name Generator works

How the starship name generator works

A ship's name is the first thing a reader learns about her, and the generator gives four kinds. The navy name is the warship's, in the manner of the real navies that name ships for virtues, a virtue alone or a virtue and a noun, the Vigilant, the Indomitable, the Vigilant Dawn, the Iron Resolve, the Resolute Lance, the Steadfast Shield, the Dauntless Tide, the Relentless Hammer, the Sovereign Crown, or a noun of a world, the Sword of Callix, the Shield of Tarsis, the Flame of Seraphis, or an adjective and a noun, the Cold Ledger, the Silent Meridian, the Winter Star, the Morning Lance, which is a name for a ship that expects to fight. The merchant name is the freighter's, and freighters are named the way fishing boats are, for luck and the owner, the Lucky Marrow, the Prosperous Okonkwo, the Honest Voss, the Halloran Venture, the Reyes Fortune, the Patient Haul, the Long Haul, the Cheerful Bargain, the Wandering Errand, the Tarsis Runner, the Solace Carrier, or the owner's own, the Vasq's Wager, Petrov's Gamble, Sørlie's Return. The prefixed name is the registry's, a prefix in the manner of the real HMS and USS with the name after it, ISV Vigilant Dawn, CSS Halden's Pride, RSV Kestrine, SNV Castellan, FTV Resolute, ESS Aurelian, MV Thorne, HSV Veyra's Hope, UCS Solace, and the prefixes are coined for the shared setting of this section so that ISV, CSS and RSV can stand for whatever navy, colony or survey a story needs. The crew nickname is the ship's real name, the one her crew uses when she leaks, an adjective and an undignified thing, the Rusty Bucket, the Leaky Barge, the Fat Goose, the Slow Mule, the Crooked Kettle, the Grumpy Pig, the Patched Coffin, the Battered Teapot, the Hungry Toad, or the bare thing, the Bucket, the Brick, the Whale, or Old with the adjective, Old Leaky, Old Rattling, Old Stubborn, or the captain's, Vasq's Goose, Marrow's Tub, Quade's Beetle, since every ship with a name on her hull has another one in her galley.

Navy name gives the warship's. Merchant name gives the freighter's. Prefixed name gives the registry's. Crew nickname gives the galley's.

There is no gender option, since a ship is called she by tradition and needs no other.

The lists are original. The virtues and nouns are ordinary words in the manner of the real navies, the worlds, surnames and prefixes are the shared setting of this section, and the nicknames are built for this page; no published ship name appears in them, a match with a novel, a series or a game would be chance, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the ship's class, the starship class page; for the fleet she sails in, the fleet name page; for her registry number, the spacecraft registry page; for the station she docks at, the space station page; and for her captain, the sci-fi character page.
