How the Wi-Fi Network Name Generator works
This wifi name generator is free and makes a new batch each time. Generate Wi-Fi network names in every register: the pun SSID, Pretty Fly for a Wi-Fi and Abraham Linksys; the neighbour-baiting joke, Get Off My LAN and Password Is Password; the plain household label, Willow Cottage Wi-Fi and Flat 4B; the stealth name that looks like a factory default, NETGEAR-4821 and BT-Hub_3F2A; and the threatening one, FBI Surveillance Van 7 and Definitely Not a Honeypot. Every result is under the 32-character SSID limit. Choose a style and generate up to a hundred.
Wifi name generator: where the names come from
A Wi-Fi network name is the only piece of writing most households publish to the whole street, and it has grown a folk culture of its own. The pun SSID is the best-known register, Pretty Fly for a Wi-Fi, The LAN Before Time, Abraham Linksys, Lord of the Pings, Bill Wi the Science Fi, each a film, song or public figure bent through LAN, ping, Wi-Fi or router; the list here is fixed, since a pun cannot be assembled from parts, and holds the ones people actually use. The neighbour-baiting names talk to whoever is scanning the list from the flat next door, Get Off My LAN, Not Yours, Kevin, Password Is 1234 Just Kidding, Loading, and the joke depends on the reader being a stranger with a phone in their hand. The plain household names are what most people want, Willow Cottage Wi-Fi, Okafor Home, Flat 4B, Unit 12, and they are here with invented house names and a spread of surnames as a template. The stealth style makes a network look like a router that was never renamed, NETGEAR-4821, TP-Link_3F2A, BT-Hub-7C1E-5G, which is the choice of people who would rather not be identified from the list at all, and the threatening style, FBI Surveillance Van 7, NSA Listening Post, Definitely Not a Honeypot, Virus Distribution Center, is the oldest joke in the genre and still works.
An SSID may be up to 32 bytes and can contain spaces and most punctuation, though a few devices, older printers and smart plugs in particular, choke on anything but letters, digits, hyphens and underscores, which is one argument for the plain and stealth styles on the main network and a joke name on the guest one. Nothing here identifies a real person or a real address: the surnames are common ones from several countries and the house names are the kind found on any village lane. The stealth names use real router-vendor prefixes because that is what makes them stealthy, and they are labels, not endorsements.
For the devices that will join the network, the Hostname and device name page; for the household's email, the Email address page; and for the server your friends gather on once they are connected, the Server name page.
FAQ
How long can a Wi-Fi network name be?
Up to 32 bytes, which is 32 characters if you stick to plain letters and digits. Spaces and most punctuation are allowed, but a few older printers and smart-home devices refuse to join a network whose name has anything but letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
Is it safe to use a funny Wi-Fi name?
Yes. The name has nothing to do with the security of the network, which comes from the password and the encryption setting. The only caution is not to put your real surname, flat number and street on a network you would rather nobody could place.
Why do people name their Wi-Fi FBI Surveillance Van?
It is the oldest joke in the genre: a network name visible to every neighbour that claims to be something sinister. It has been used so long that it now reads as a friendly signal that the household has a sense of humour rather than as a real threat.
Should I hide my network name instead?
Hiding the SSID stops it appearing in lists but makes your devices broadcast it wherever they go, so it is not a privacy gain. A plain or stealth name, NETGEAR-4821, with a strong password is a better way to be unremarkable.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. The names are common jokes, invented house names and generic router labels, and belong to no one. For a scene in a story where a character scans a list of networks, or for placeholder SSIDs in a screenshot or a test fixture, use them freely.
