How the Xbox Gamertag Generator works
This Xbox gamertag generator makes Xbox gamertags in the shapes Xbox Live has used since 2002: Ghost Otter and Quiet Raven as two spaced words, Frost Lynx 7 and VoidLynx42 with a number, xX Comet Xx wrapped, Otto Plays and Nell Snipes as a name and a verb, or a coined one-word tag like Kaelix. Every result is twelve characters or fewer including spaces, which is the limit on a modern gamertag. Choose a style and generate up to a hundred.
How the Xbox gamertag generator works
The Xbox gamertag is the original console handle and it set the rules the others copied. A gamertag is up to twelve characters of letters, numbers and spaces, and since 2019 it need not be unique: if you choose one that exists, Xbox appends a suffix number in a smaller font, Ghost Otter#4821, which is why the tags here are short enough to leave that room and why the numbered style, Frost Lynx 7, exists as a way of avoiding the suffix. The spaces are the distinctive part. Xbox has allowed a space in a gamertag from the start, so the classic form is two capitalised words, Ghost Otter, Rusty Badger, The Falcon, that read as a name rather than a compound; the number suffix and the xX wrapper are the 2007 style from the Halo and Call of Duty years, kept now with some irony; the name-and-verb, Otto Plays, Nell Snipes, is the streamer form; and the coined one-word tag, Kaelix, Torvik, Vexis, is the one most likely to be free in the original twelve-character space, so that the suffix number never appears.
The gamertag is also the name on Minecraft Bedrock, on Xbox app PC games and on anything signed in with a Microsoft account, so it is more widely shown than a console name used to be. The word lists here are sharp English words, animals and short first names, with coined names for the one-word style, and nothing here is an existing tag, only a name in the style. The first change of a gamertag is free and every later one costs a fee, so it is worth checking the tag on the Xbox site before you set it.
For the same person on the other console, the PlayStation ID page; for the PC identity beside it, the Steam page; and for the tag a squad shows in front of every name, the Clan tag page in this section.
FAQ
What are the Xbox gamertag rules?
Up to twelve characters of letters, numbers and spaces, no symbols, not starting with a number. Since 2019 a gamertag need not be unique; a duplicate gets a suffix number shown in smaller type, so a tag under twelve characters can stay clean.
What is the suffix number after some gamertags?
If the tag you choose already exists, Xbox adds a number after a hash, Ghost Otter#4821, and shows it in a smaller font. It is unique per account. Choose a tag nobody has and no suffix appears, which is why the coined one-word tags are useful.
Can I change my gamertag?
Yes, from the Xbox site or the console settings. The first change is free and each later change costs a fee. Friends, achievements and games follow the account, but old clips and screenshots keep the old tag.
Is the gamertag the same on PC and Minecraft?
Yes. Anything signed in with the Microsoft account uses the gamertag, including the Xbox app on Windows and Minecraft Bedrock Edition, so a tag chosen for the console shows in those too. Minecraft Java uses a separate Mojang name.
Can I use these names for fiction or test data?
Yes. The gamertags are fresh combinations of common words, first names and coined names and cannot be owned, and duplicates are allowed anyway. For a real account, check the tag on the Xbox site; for a fictional player in a story, use them freely.
