How the Root Calculator works

This root calculator finds the square root, cube root or any nth root of a number. It tells you whether the root is exact, simplifies the radical into its neatest form, such as √72 = 6√2, and checks the answer by raising it back to the power. Odd roots of negative numbers are real, and the square root of a negative is shown with i.

A root undoes a power: the cube root of 27 is 3 because 3³ = 27. Most roots are irrational, so they never end or repeat, which is why maths keeps them as a simplified radical rather than a rounded decimal. Simplifying pulls perfect powers out from under the root sign. That exact form is what homework, exams and geometry answers usually expect.

How the root calculator works

The formula is the nth root of x = x^(1/n). To simplify, the calculator factors x into primes and moves every complete group of n identical primes outside the root. For √72, 72 = 2³ × 3², so one 2 and one 3 come out, leaving 6√2. The decimal value is then raised to the nth power as a check.

First example. √72 = 6√2 ≈ 8.485281, because 72 = 36 × 2 and √36 = 6.

Second example. ∛27 = 3 exactly, since 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. The calculator marks it as a perfect cube.

How many square roots does a number have? Every positive number has two, such as +5 and -5 for 25; the √ symbol means the positive one, called the principal root.

Tips and pitfalls

FAQ

How do you find a square root without a calculator?

Find the two perfect squares either side, then refine. √50 sits between √49 = 7 and √64 = 8, close to 7. Try 7.07: 7.07² = 49.98, so √50 ≈ 7.071. Repeating "average the guess with the number divided by the guess" converges quickly.

How do you simplify a square root?

Split the number into a perfect square times what is left, then take the square root of the perfect square outside. √50 = √(25 × 2) = 5√2 and √200 = √(100 × 2) = 10√2. The calculator finds the largest perfect power factor automatically.

What is the cube root of a negative number?

It is negative. The cube root of -27 is -3, because -3 × -3 × -3 = -27. Every odd root of a negative number is real and negative. Only even roots, such as square roots and fourth roots, of a negative number need imaginary numbers.

What is a perfect square?

A perfect square is a whole number whose square root is also a whole number, such as 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49 and 64. Likewise perfect cubes include 8, 27, 64 and 125. The calculator labels the root as exact when your number is a perfect power.

What is the square root of 2?

√2 is about 1.41421356, and it is irrational, so its decimals never end or repeat. It is the diagonal of a square with sides of 1, and it is the ratio between A-series paper sizes such as A4 and A3. Keep it as √2 in exact working.
