How the Audio Stutter Effect works
Use this stutter effect to chop a track into tempo-locked repeats, the rapid-fire glitch rolls heard in EDM builds, trap fills and remixes. Enter the song's tempo, pick a grid and a repeat length, and decide how often a step stutters. Each pattern number gives a different, repeatable result.
How the stutter effect works
The track is divided into steps on a beat grid set by the tempo. On each step the tool rolls a die against your chance setting. When a step is chosen, its opening slice, an eighth, sixteenth or thirty-second note long, is repeated until the step ends. Every repeat gets a 2 ms fade at each edge so the loops do not click. Unchosen steps play through untouched.
Getting the stutter effect in time
The tempo must match the song or the repeats drift off the beat. Run the file through the BPM detector first if you do not know it, and make sure the track starts on a downbeat; trim any silence or pickup first so the grid lines up with bar one.
Repeatable patterns
The randomness is seeded, so the same pattern number always produces the same stutters. Step through numbers until a pattern sounds right, then export. Mixed picks a different repeat length for each stuttered step, which sounds the most like a hand-programmed glitch edit.
FAQ
What is the difference between stutter and beat repeat?
They are the same idea under different names. Beat repeat is the name used in Ableton Live, while stutter edit comes from the classic plugin. Both capture a short slice and loop it in time with the beat.
Why do the repeats sound out of time?
The tempo setting does not match the track, or the music does not start exactly on the first beat. Check the BPM with a detector and trim the start of the file so the downbeat is at zero seconds.
Can I apply the stutter to only part of a song?
Trim the section you want with the audio trimmer, stutter it here, then join it back with the audio joiner. Setting the chance to 100 percent on a short section gives a classic build-up roll.
