How the Audio to MIDI works

This audio to MIDI converter turns a single melody line into a MIDI file you can drop into any DAW, notation app or synth. Hum, sing, whistle or play one instrument, load the recording, and export a .mid file with every note, its timing and its loudness. Everything happens in your browser.

How audio to MIDI conversion works

The recording is resampled to about 11 kHz and analysed in steps of roughly 12 ms. Each step uses the YIN pitch tracker, which compares the signal with delayed copies of itself to find the period of the note. The pitch is rounded to the nearest semitone, and runs of the same note become one MIDI note. Loudness sets the velocity, and anything below the gate is treated as silence.

Getting a clean audio to MIDI result

The converter is monophonic: it follows one note at a time. Chords, full mixes and drums will give scattered notes. A dry, close recording of a single voice or instrument works best. Set the lowest and highest notes just outside your melody's range to stop octave jumps.

Using the MIDI file

The file is a standard type 0 MIDI file at 120 bpm with 480 ticks per beat, so one second of audio equals two beats. Import it and set your project tempo to match, or quantise the notes afterwards.

FAQ

Can it convert a full song to MIDI?

Not usefully. Separating several instruments and chords from a mixed song needs a polyphonic transcription model. This tool is built for one melody at a time, such as a hummed idea or a solo line.

Why are there short wrong notes between real ones?

Pitch slides, breaths and consonants can briefly read as other notes. Raise the shortest note setting to drop those blips, or raise the gate so quiet transitions are treated as silence.

What tempo is the MIDI file?

It is written at 120 beats per minute, with notes placed at their real times. If your melody was at another tempo, the notes still play at the right moments, but the bar lines in your DAW will not line up.
