How the Bar Chart Maker works

This bar chart maker draws grouped or stacked bars. Paste a table with a label column and one or more number columns and this page draws it as a bar chart. Multiple columns become grouped or stacked bars with a legend, the bars can run vertically or horizontally, and the finished chart downloads as an SVG or a PNG at up to three times the preview size.

Bar chart maker: getting a good result

Data. The first column holds the category names and every column after it that contains numbers becomes a series. A single number column gives one bar per category; two or more give a cluster per category, or one stacked bar when Multiple series is set to Stacked. Paste straight from a spreadsheet: tab-separated cells are converted to commas as they arrive. Rows are drawn in the order you give them, so sort the table first if you want the bars ranked.

Grouped or stacked. Grouped bars are the right choice when the reader should compare series side by side within a category, such as revenue against costs for each quarter. Stacked bars show the total for each category and how it is split, and are better when the total is the point and the split is secondary. Stacked bars share one axis scale, so the axis runs to the largest total rather than the largest single value.

Vertical or horizontal. Vertical bars are the default and suit short category names. Switch to Horizontal when the names are long, such as product titles or survey answers; the names then sit on the left in full instead of crowding the bottom axis, and a long list of categories reads down the page like a table.

Labels and format. The title goes above the chart and the axis labels beside the axes; leave any of them blank to omit it. Value labels print each bar's number at its end, which saves the reader tracing across to the axis. Number format applies to both the axis ticks and the value labels: Thousands separator writes 12,500, and Percent treats 0.25 as 25%, so give percentages as fractions when you use it.

Colours and export. Each series takes the next colour from the chosen palette, and the legend appears whenever there is more than one. Download SVG gives a vector file that stays sharp at any size and opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and every browser. Download PNG renders the same SVG at 1×, 2× or 3× the preview width on a white background. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard for pasting into an HTML page. Everything runs in the browser, so the numbers you paste never leave your computer.

FAQ

What format does the data need to be in?

Comma-separated text with a header row. The first column is the category label and the rest are numbers. Pasting from Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets works directly because tabs are converted to commas; quoted values with commas inside them are also handled.

Can I make a stacked bar chart?

Yes. Give the table two or more number columns and set Multiple series to Stacked. Each category becomes one bar split into coloured segments in column order, and the axis runs to the largest total. Value labels are hidden in stacked mode because they would overlap.

How do I make the bars horizontal?

Set Bars to Horizontal. The categories move to the left axis and the values run along the bottom, which suits long names and long lists. Every other option, including grouping, stacking and value labels, works the same way in either orientation.

Why are my bars all the same colour?

With a single number column there is only one series, so every bar uses the first palette colour. Add a second column, or split the values into separate columns, if you want a different colour per group. Changing the Colours menu changes which colour the single series takes.
