How the MP3 ID3 Tag Editor works
This MP3 tag editor rewrites the ID3 tag that music players read. Choose an MP3 and the panel shows its current title, artist, album and cover art. Type new values into any of the fields; leave a field blank to keep what is there. To add or replace the cover, choose a JPEG or PNG image together with the MP3 (select both at once, or drop both on the page). Download saves the MP3 with its new tags. Nothing is uploaded.
The song name, artist and album you see in a music player do not come from the file name. They live in an ID3 tag, a small block of data at the start of an MP3 that sits in front of the audio. Music apps, car stereos, phones and podcast players read it to fill their libraries. A missing or wrong tag is why a track shows up as "Unknown Artist" or "Track 01", or why a whole album appears without its artwork.
What this MP3 tag editor changes
- Title (the TIT2 frame) is the song or episode name.
- Artist (TPE1) is the performer, band or podcast host.
- Album (TALB) groups tracks together in a library.
- Cover art (APIC) is the picture shown on lock screens, in car displays and in album grids. It is stored as the front cover image.
Every other frame already in the tag, such as track number, year, genre, composer, lyrics and comments, is copied across untouched. The audio itself is copied byte for byte, so there is no re-encoding and no loss in quality.
How the tag is written
Text is written as UTF-16, so accented letters, non-Latin scripts and symbols display correctly in players. A file that already has an ID3v2.3 or v2.4 tag keeps its version; a file without one, or with the obsolete v2.2 format, gets a new ID3v2.3 tag, the version almost every player supports. Some older MP3s also carry an ID3v1 tag at the very end; when one is present, its title, artist and album are updated to match, limited to the 30 characters and basic Latin letters that format allows.
Cover art tips
- Use a square image. Players crop or letterbox anything else. 600 × 600 to 1400 × 1400 pixels covers every common device.
- Keep it small. The picture is stored inside every MP3 it is added to, so a 5 MB photo makes every track 5 MB larger. A JPEG of 100 to 300 kB is plenty.
- JPEG or PNG only. These are the two formats players are required to understand.
Checking the result
Open the downloaded file in the Audio Info Inspector, or just choose it here again: the panel reads back the tag you wrote. Some music apps cache artwork, so a changed cover may only appear after the track is removed and added back to the library.
Other formats
ID3 is specific to MP3. WAV files have their own metadata chunks, and M4A, AAC and ALAC files use MP4 atoms instead, so this editor accepts MP3 only. To get a tagged MP3 from a WAV, convert it with WAV to MP3 first and tag the result here.
FAQ
Does editing tags reduce audio quality?
No. Only the tag at the start of the file is rewritten. The audio frames are copied byte for byte, so the sound is identical to the original file you chose.
How do I add album art to an MP3?
Choose the MP3 and a JPEG or PNG image at the same time. The image replaces any existing cover art, and Download saves the updated MP3 with the new cover embedded.
How do I remove a field completely?
Blank fields keep their existing value. To clear the cover art, set Existing cover art to Remove. Clearing a text field is not supported; type the new value you want instead.
Can I edit several MP3s at once?
One at a time. If you choose several MP3s, only the first is edited and the rest are ignored. Download the result, then choose the next file to edit it.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The tag is read and rewritten inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so the file stays private and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
