How the Image Converter works

Drop a picture into this image converter and choose PNG, JPEG, WebP or AVIF. It reads iPhone HEIC photos, TIFF scans, Photoshop PSD files, SVG drawings and every format your browser already opens, so one page covers the odd file someone sent you. The decoding runs in this tab and nothing is uploaded.

What the image converter reads

The converter checks the first bytes of the file rather than trusting its name, then picks a decoder. Common web formats go straight through the browser; the rest load a decoder only when they are needed.

Input formats and how each one is decoded

Input Decoder Notes
JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, ICO Browser GIF gives its first frame
WebP, AVIF Browser Every current browser decodes both
HEIC, HEIF libheif The main image of an iPhone photo
TIFF UTIF The first page of a multi-page file
PSD ag-psd The flattened composite Photoshop saved
SVG Browser Drawn at its own width and height

Choosing the output format

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it suits screenshots, logos and anything you will edit again. JPEG is the safest choice for photos that have to open everywhere, and it fills transparent areas with white. WebP is smaller than JPEG at the same quality and keeps transparency. AVIF is smaller again but takes longer to encode, and not every browser can save it.

Quality and size

The quality slider applies to JPEG, WebP and AVIF; PNG ignores it. Around 80 to 85 is hard to tell from the original for photos. Setting a maximum width scales larger images down, keeping the aspect ratio, which saves far more space than lowering the quality.

FAQ

Why does my PSD come out blank or fail?

The converter uses the flattened copy Photoshop stores inside the file. If the PSD was saved with Maximize Compatibility turned off, that copy is missing. Open it in Photoshop, turn the option on and save again, or use the PSD to PNG tool to get each layer.

Why can't I save as WebP or AVIF?

Saving uses your browser's own encoder. Chrome, Edge and Firefox save WebP and AVIF, and Safari 16.4 and newer saves AVIF but not WebP. If your browser cannot do it, the page says so; pick PNG or JPEG, or open this page in another browser.

Does it keep the photo's metadata?

No. Drawing the image to a canvas drops EXIF data such as the camera model, the date and the GPS location, so the converted file is safer to share. If you only want to remove the metadata and keep the original format, the EXIF stripper does that without re-encoding.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript running in this tab, and the decoders for HEIC, TIFF and PSD are downloaded from this site only when you drop one of those files. Closing the tab clears the image.
