How the MOD Pattern Viewer works

Drop a tracker module and this MOD pattern viewer shows its patterns the way the tracker did: one column per channel, one line per row, with the note, instrument, volume and effect in each cell. Press Preview and the current row stays highlighted as the song plays, and Export saves every pattern as a plain text file. libopenmpt reads the module inside this tab, so it is never uploaded.

How to read the MOD pattern viewer

Each line is one row, numbered on the left, and each column between the bars is a channel. A cell such as D#6 04 .. C14 reads as note D sharp in octave 6, played with instrument 4, with nothing in the volume column and effect C14, which sets the volume. Dots mean the field is empty, so a row of dots is a rest, and === is a note off. The header shows the position in the order list, the pattern being played and the current row.

Patterns, orders and rows

A module is built from patterns, short blocks usually 64 rows long, and an order list that says which pattern plays next. The same pattern can appear many times in the order list, which is how a chorus repeats without being stored twice. Speed and tempo effects decide how quickly the rows go by, so the viewer follows the song as it was actually played.

Common effect letters

Effects that appear most often in MOD and XM patterns

Effect Name What it does
0xy Arpeggio Cycles the note through two extra pitches for a chord sound
1xx / 2xx Portamento Slides the pitch up or down
4xy Vibrato Wobbles the pitch
Axy Volume slide Fades the volume up or down
Cxx Set volume Sets the channel volume
Fxx Set speed or tempo Changes how fast rows play

Exporting the patterns

The text export lists every pattern in the module in number order, each with its row count and every row in the same layout as the viewer. It is handy for studying how a song was built or for keeping notes alongside it. For the song details and sample names, use the module info viewer.

FAQ

Why does the viewer jump between patterns out of order?

It follows the order list, not the pattern numbers. A song might play pattern 0, then 3, then 1, then 3 again, and pattern jump or break effects can skip to another pattern partway through, so the viewer shows whichever pattern the song is playing at that moment.

Can I edit the notes here?

No. This page shows and exports the patterns but does not change them. To edit a module, open it in a free tracker such as OpenMPT, MilkyTracker or Schism Tracker, which also show the patterns in this same layout and can save the file again.

Why are the effect letters different between files?

Each format names its effects slightly differently. MOD and XM use digits and letters such as A0F, while S3M and IT use a letter scheme where D is volume slide and T is tempo. The viewer shows each file in its own notation, matching what its tracker displayed.

Is my module uploaded?

No. The module is read by libopenmpt compiled to WebAssembly and running in this tab, and nothing is sent to a server. Closing the tab clears the module and the pattern display.
