How the Mute Video works

Mute video files without opening an editor: drop in a clip, press Render and download a copy with no soundtrack at all. Background chatter, music you have no licence for and wind noise are all gone. The file is processed by your own browser and never uploaded.

Turning the volume down in a player hides the sound from you. It does not remove it from the file. Anyone who downloads or reposts the clip still hears the original audio, and platforms still scan it. A truly silent copy needs the audio track taken out of the file itself.

Why mute a video?

How the mute video tool works

Your browser decodes the clip, draws every frame onto a canvas and records that canvas with the MediaRecorder API. Only the canvas's picture goes into the recording, so the output file has no audio track. It is not a silent track or a track at volume zero. This matters for players that show a speaker icon whenever a track exists.

The render runs at playback speed, so a 2-minute clip takes about 2 minutes. Keep the tab active while it works.

Output format and quality

Chrome, Edge and Firefox save WebM (VP9 or VP8); Safari saves MP4 (H.264). Resolution matches the source and the bitrate is about 6 Mbit/s. Muting usually shrinks a file, because audio typically accounts for 128 to 320 kbit/s of the total. On a long, low-bitrate screen recording that can be a noticeable share.

Typical audio bitrate Space per minute
96 kbit/s (voice) 0.7 MB
128 kbit/s (phone video) 0.96 MB
192 kbit/s 1.4 MB
320 kbit/s (high-quality music) 2.4 MB

Tips and pitfalls

Want to keep the sound as well? Pull the audio out first with the extract audio tool, then mute the video. You end up with two files you can recombine in any editor.

Only need part of the clip? The video trimmer has a "Remove" sound option, so you can cut and mute in one render.

Embedding as a background loop? Use autoplay muted loop playsinline on the video tag. Browsers still demand the muted attribute even when the file is silent.

How to read the result

The stats list the clip length, frame size and new file size. Play the result to confirm the picture is intact and the speaker icon is gone, then Download.

FAQ

Does muting a video reduce the file size?

Usually a little. The audio track is removed entirely, which saves roughly 1 MB per minute for typical phone footage. The picture is re-encoded at about 6 Mbit/s, so a heavily compressed source can come out slightly larger.

Is the audio removed or just turned down?

Removed. The output contains no audio track at all, so players show no sound control, and nothing can be recovered from it later. Keep your original file if you might want the sound back.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser using its built-in video decoder and recorder. The file never leaves your device, so private recordings and unreleased footage stay with you.

Will muting stop a copyright claim?

It removes the audio fingerprint that most automated claims match, such as a song playing in the background. Claims based on the picture itself, like a clip from a film or TV show, are not affected by muting.
