How the OGG To MP3 works

Drop in an OGG file from a game, a Linux app or a voice recorder and download it as an MP3. This OGG to MP3 converter decodes the Vorbis audio with your browser's decoder and encodes it at 128, 192 or 320 kbps in the same tab. Nothing is uploaded.

OGG to MP3: Vorbis to the format everything plays

OGG is a container from the Xiph.Org Foundation. A .ogg file almost always holds Vorbis, a free lossy codec that sounds as good as or better than MP3 at the same bit rate and is common in game assets, Wikipedia audio and Linux software. Some .ogg files hold Opus or FLAC instead. The point of converting to MP3 is reach: many phones, cars, DJ apps and upload forms still do not accept OGG.

What is lost in the transcode

Browser support for OGG decoding

OGG Vorbis decodes in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Samsung Internet on every platform. Safari added Vorbis playback only recently, in Safari 17 on macOS and iOS 17, and support is still patchy, so older iPhones and Macs will refuse the file. If Safari reports that the file could not be decoded, open this page in Chrome or Firefox.

How to read the stats

Source shows channels, decoded rate, length and the OGG's size. Output is the MP3 bit rate and Output size estimates the MP3, which is bit rate × seconds. Vorbis files encoded at low quality are often mono 22 kHz, which the stats will show.

Opus files use Opus to MP3 and browser recordings use WebM to MP3. For an editable copy try audio to WAV.

FAQ

Does converting OGG to MP3 lose quality?

Slightly. Vorbis and MP3 are both lossy, so the MP3 encoder discards detail on top of what the Vorbis encoder removed. Choosing 320 kbps keeps the extra loss very small, and for speech or game sound effects 128 kbps is usually indistinguishable.

Why will Safari not open my OGG file?

Safari only began decoding Ogg Vorbis in version 17, and older iPhones and Macs cannot read it at all. Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, which have decoded OGG for over a decade, and the conversion will work the same way.

What if my .ogg file contains Opus?

Browsers that decode Opus will handle it here as well, because the decoder reads the stream type rather than the extension. The dedicated Opus to MP3 page explains the codec differences and suggests bit rates for typical Opus voice notes.

Is my OGG uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is decoded, processed and encoded inside your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works offline once the page has loaded and your audio stays private.
