How the Panorama Stitcher works
Use this to stitch photos into panorama online with no upload. Take a few photos that overlap, drop them in from left to right, and they are joined into one wide image. The tool finds the same details in neighbouring photos, works out how each one has to be shifted and warped to line up with the last, and lays them onto a single canvas. Set the detail level if a pair refuses to match, then download the panorama. Nothing is uploaded.
Stitch photos into panorama online: what it does and why
A panorama is several photographs of the same scene taken by turning on the spot, each one overlapping the one before. Joining them by hand means nudging layers around until the seams line up, and they never quite do, because turning the camera changes the perspective. This tool does the alignment properly. For each pair of neighbouring photos it detects a few thousand distinctive corners and blobs, describes the patch around each one, and looks for the same patches in the other photo. From the matched pairs it solves for a projective transform, the warp that maps one photo's plane onto the other's, using a voting scheme that discards matches which disagree with the majority. The second photo is then warped onto the first, and the third onto that result, and so on.
Drop the photos in the order they were taken, left to right or top to bottom. Each one needs to share roughly a third of its width with its neighbour; less than that and there are too few matches to trust, more is fine. Detail level sets how many features are looked for in each photo. The default suits most scenes; raise it for flat, low-texture subjects like sky and water where matches are scarce, or lower it to speed up very large sets. The stats show, for each pair, how many matches were found and how many agreed with the final alignment. A pair with fewer than ten agreeing matches is rejected rather than stitched badly, and the panorama stops at the last photo that fitted.
The output is not cropped or blended: the warped edges are left transparent, and where photos overlap the earlier one is kept, so a moving subject can leave a visible seam. Straighten the result with the image straightener and trim the ragged edges with the auto crop tool. Photos are scaled to 1600 pixels on the long side before matching, which keeps the process quick on a phone and is plenty for a web-sized panorama.
FAQ
Why did it stop after two photos?
A pair had fewer than ten agreeing matches, so the stitch was rejected. Check that the photos overlap by at least a third, raise the detail level for sky, water or plain walls, and make sure they are in the order taken.
Why is the far end of the panorama stretched?
Every photo is warped onto the first one's plane, and a projective warp stretches more the further the camera turned. For wide sweeps, use the middle photo as the first drop, or stitch in two halves.
Why does a person appear twice?
They moved between shots and the overlap kept the earlier photo. Take shots quickly, or choose overlap areas without people and traffic, so nothing moves between one frame and the next.
How do I tidy the ragged edges?
Run the result through the image straightener if the horizon leans, then auto crop with Transparency as the background to trim the empty corners. Save the result as PNG if you need the transparency kept.
