How the Remove PDF Watermark works

A watermark is usually added at the last minute: a DRAFT stamp across a proposal, CONFIDENTIAL on a report, a company name on a template. When the document moves on, the stamp has to go, and the source file is often lost. This tool takes the watermark out of the PDF itself and leaves the rest of each page exactly as it was.

How to remove watermark from PDF files

1. Drop the PDF into the box.
2. If the watermark is text, type the words it shows, for example DRAFT. Case and spacing do not matter. Leave the box empty to remove only watermarks that are tagged as watermarks.
3. Run the tool and download the copy ending in -no-watermark.pdf.

The stats show how many pages changed and what kind of watermark was found on them.

What it can find

PDF watermarks are added in a few different ways, and the tool looks for each of them.

The first three carry a label that says "this is a watermark", so they can be removed safely with the text box left empty. A plain text stamp is just text drawn on the page, with nothing to mark it out. For those, the tool reads every block of text on each page, decodes it using the font's character map, and removes the blocks whose text contains the words you typed.

How it works

A PDF page is a short program of drawing commands: set a font, move here, show this text, draw this image. The tool opens the file with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, and reads each page's commands. It never redraws or rasterises the page. Instead it cuts out the exact commands that draw the watermark and writes everything else back untouched, so text stays selectable, vector drawings stay sharp and the file size barely changes. Reusable drawings that a page calls on, known as form objects, are checked the same way, because watermarks often hide inside them.

Watermark annotations are removed from each page's list of annotations. Links, comments and form fields in the same list are kept.

Tips and pitfalls

Type the words the watermark shows. Case and spaces are ignored, so draft matches a stamp reading "D R A F T". Different words never match: Draft version will not find "Draft copy". Use the shortest distinctive part, such as CONFIDENTIAL rather than the whole sentence.

Real text with the same words goes too. Matching works on whole text blocks. If a paragraph on the page contains the word you typed and was written as one block, it is removed along with the stamp. Pick a word that only appears in the watermark, and check the result before sending it.

Scanned watermarks cannot be removed. If the page is a scan or a photo, the watermark is pixels inside the image. There are no drawing commands to cut, so nothing is found. Removing it would mean editing the image itself.

Some stamps are drawn as shapes. A few tools turn watermark text into outlines, so the letters are paths rather than text. Those have no words to match and are not removed unless they are tagged as watermarks.

Locked files must be unlocked first. A password-protected PDF is encrypted, so its page commands cannot be read until the protection is removed.

Only edit documents you are allowed to. A watermark often records ownership, a licence or a document's status. Removing one from a file you made, or from a draft that has been approved, is routine. Removing a copyright or licence mark from someone else's work can breach their rights.

Reading the result

Pages changed counts pages where anything was removed. Watermark annotations and Tagged watermarks are the labelled kinds. Matching text blocks counts text removed because it contained your words. If that number is much higher than the number of pages, the words probably appear in the body text too, so try a more specific phrase.
