How the Rep Counter works
This squat counter webcam tool counts reps for you. Choose the exercise, press Start camera, and step back so the joint being measured is in frame — whole body for squats, side-on for push-ups, upper body for curls. The big number in the corner is your rep count; the dot on the tracked joint turns red at the bottom of the movement and green when you come back up, and a rep is added each time you do both. The readout shows the live joint angle. Reset count zeroes it between sets.
Squat counter webcam: what it does and why
Counting reps yourself is the first thing to go when a set gets hard. This page hands the job to a body pose model that runs in your browser: it finds 33 points on your body every frame — shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles — and the counter watches the angle at one joint and waits for it to go through a full cycle.
How a rep is counted. For squats the joint is the knee, measured as the angle between hip, knee and ankle. Standing, it is close to 180 degrees; at the bottom of a squat it is around 90. The counter has two thresholds: the angle must first fall below the "down" value (100 degrees for squats) and then rise back above the "up" value (160) before a rep is added. Two thresholds rather than one is what stops a wobble at the bottom being counted as several reps — you have to actually stand up. Push-ups use the elbow — shoulder, elbow, wrist — with 95 and 155 degrees; curls use the same joint the other way round, with a rep counted when the arm closes past 60 and then opens past 150.
Which side it watches. Both left and right joints are tracked, and the counter uses whichever the model is more confident about, which in a side view is the one nearer the camera. For squats it does not matter much; for push-ups it means you should be side-on so one whole arm is visible. The red and green dot shows you which joint it picked.
Getting a clean count. The model needs the whole joint — all three points — in frame and reasonably lit. For squats, put the laptop on the floor or a low chair a couple of metres away, angled up. For push-ups, place it on the floor to one side. Loose clothing is fine; the model is trained on it. Partial reps that do not pass the thresholds are simply not counted, which is arguably a feature.
Why the thresholds are fixed. They are conventional full-range values that work for most people. If your mobility does not allow a 100-degree knee angle the squat counter will not fire, and the honest answer is that a shallower threshold would be counting shallower squats; the angle readout lets you see how deep you go.
Privacy. The pose model runs in WebAssembly inside the page. Nothing from the camera leaves your browser; the model is downloaded once, about 12 MB, and then cached.
FAQ
The count is not going up. What am I doing wrong?
Check the angle readout. If it says Body not in view, step back until the whole joint is visible. If it shows a number that never reaches the down threshold — 100° for squats, 95° for push-ups — you are not going deep enough to register, or the camera is too head-on for the angle to be measured well; try a side view.
Can it count other exercises?
Only the three listed. Lunges, sit-ups and pull-ups each need a different joint and thresholds. The same model could do them; this page keeps to the three that count reliably from a laptop webcam.
Does it count reps for two people?
No — one body is tracked, the most prominent in frame. A second person is ignored, so a training partner standing beside you will not add to your count.
Is the count saved anywhere?
No. It is a number in the page that Reset count or closing the tab clears. Snap saves a PNG of the frame with the count drawn in the corner, if you want a record.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in Chrome or Safari, propped up so the camera sees you. Frame rate is lower on older phones, and very fast reps may be missed if the bottom of the movement falls between frames.
