Reverse Video
Play Any Clip Backwards Frame by Frame, Up to 20 Seconds Long
OneTask is free, with no sign-up, and built by one person.
If this tool saved you time, a coffee helps keep new ones coming.
How the Reverse Video works
This reverse video tool plays a clip backwards and saves it as a new video. Choose where to start and how long a section to take, up to 20 seconds, press Render and download. Every frame is captured and reassembled in reverse order inside your browser.
Reversed footage is one of the oldest tricks in film, and it still works. Water leaps back into a glass, a jump lands in reverse, a messy desk tidies itself, a dropped phone flies into a hand. Short reversed clips are a staple of Reels and TikTok because the brain spots the impossible motion instantly.
How the reverse video tool works
Video files are built to be played forwards. Most frames are stored only as changes from the frame before, so a player cannot simply run backwards. The tool therefore works in two passes.
First it steps through your section at 30 frames per second, seeking to each moment and saving the frame as a high-quality JPEG in memory. Then it paints those frames onto a canvas from last to first and records the canvas as a new video at 30 fps. Two passes is why the progress bar moves through the capture first and the encoding second.
Why there is a 20-second limit
Every captured frame is held in memory until the reversed video is written. Twenty seconds at 30 fps is 600 frames. At 1080p, each JPEG is roughly 150 to 400 kB, so a full 20-second section can use 100 to 250 MB of memory. Longer sections would crash browser tabs on phones and older laptops.
| Section | Frames | Approx. memory at 1080p |
|---|---|---|
| 3 s | 90 | 15–35 MB |
| 5 s | 150 | 25–60 MB |
| 10 s | 300 | 50–120 MB |
| 20 s | 600 | 100–250 MB |
If you need longer, reverse it in parts and join them in an editor, last part first.
Why the reversed clip is silent
Sound played backwards is mostly an unintelligible whoosh, and it rarely suits the clip. The output has no audio track, so you can add music in the app you post with. If you do want the backwards sound, extract the audio and run it through the audio reverser.
Tips and pitfalls
Pick a clear, single action. Reversal works best on one obvious motion: a pour, a throw, a jump, a crash. Busy scenes just look odd.
Shoot with the reverse in mind. Hold the camera still, start the action a beat after recording begins and keep going a beat after it ends, so the reversed clip has room to breathe.
Want it to bounce? The boomerang maker plays a section forwards then backwards in a loop.
Seeking is slow on some files. Long-GOP phone video and screen recordings can take a while to capture, because each seek decodes from the previous key frame.
How to read the result
The stats show the section reversed, the number of frames captured and the file size. Play the result before downloading to check the action reads well backwards.
FAQ
How do I make a video play backwards?
Drop the video in, set the start time and length of the part you want reversed, and press Render. The tool captures every frame of that section and writes them out in reverse order as a new video you can download.
Why is the reversed video silent?
Reversed sound is rarely wanted, so the tool leaves it out and the file has no audio track. Add music when you post, or extract the audio separately and reverse it with the audio reverser.
Why can I only reverse 20 seconds?
All frames are kept in memory before the reversed video is written. Twenty seconds at 30 fps is 600 frames, which already takes up to 250 MB at 1080p. Longer sections risk crashing the tab.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Frames are captured and encoded by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page keeps working if you go offline after it loads.
