How the Video Glitch Effect works
This video glitch effect tool adds the broken digital look used in music videos, gaming clips and intros: red and blue channels pulled apart, horizontal slices torn sideways and brief colour flashes. Pick a style and intensity, choose constant or burst glitches, and download the result.
What the video glitch effect does
Every glitched frame is split into its red, green and blue channels, which are redrawn slightly apart so edges gain coloured fringes. Random horizontal bands are then copied and shifted sideways, imitating a corrupted video stream or a failing cable. A few frames also get a translucent magenta band, the kind of colour flash a decoder throws when data goes missing.
Constant or bursts
Constant glitching affects every frame, which suits short loops and stylised intros. Bursts leave the video clean most of the time and break it up for a handful of frames at random moments, which feels like real interference and works well under a beat drop or a transition. Occasional bursts are subtle enough to run over a whole clip.
Getting a stronger or softer look
Intensity controls how far the colour channels separate, how many slices tear and how far they move. Low settings give a light chromatic shimmer; high settings make the picture fall apart. Use "Colour split only" for a clean RGB shift without any tearing.
Rendering
The video plays through once in real time while the effect is drawn, and the sound is kept. The finished file is WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox or MP4 in Safari.
FAQ
Is this the same as the photo glitch effect?
No. The photo glitch tool works on still images. This page applies a moving glitch to every frame of a video, with random tears and bursts that change over time, and keeps the original sound so the clip is ready to post.
Is my video uploaded to make the glitch effect?
No. The video is decoded, glitched and encoded again by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works with unreleased footage and does not need a fast connection.
Why does rendering take as long as the video?
The browser draws each frame with the effect and records the canvas in real time, which is the only way to encode video in a browser page without plugins. Keep the tab visible so the browser does not slow it down.
