How the Webcam Background Remover works

Use this to remove webcam background live in a browser. Press Start camera and allow access. After a couple of seconds the model loads and your background is blurred while you stay sharp. Switch Background to Colour for a flat backdrop, Image to put a photo of your choosing behind you, or Transparent to see the raw cut-out on the checkerboard. Snap saves the current frame as a PNG — with a real alpha channel when Transparent is selected. The camera feed never leaves your machine.

Remove webcam background: how it works

Video call apps have had a blur button for years, and it always felt like magic that a laptop could tell you from the wall behind you thirty times a second. It is not magic, it is a small neural network, and the one this page runs is the same family Google Meet uses: MediaPipe's selfie segmenter, a 250 KB model that looks at a 256 × 256 downscale of the frame and returns, for every pixel, a probability that it belongs to a person.

What happens to each frame. The camera frame goes into the model, which runs inside a WebAssembly module on your CPU — or your graphics chip if the browser lets it — and hands back a grid of numbers between 0 and 1. The tool turns those numbers into an alpha channel: anything above the Edge threshold is you, anything below is background, and the Edge softness slider decides how wide the ramp between the two is. Your cut-out is then drawn over whatever background you picked. For Blur the background is the same frame drawn again through a Gaussian blur; for Colour and Image it is a fill or a photo scaled to cover the frame. Nothing is uploaded, because the whole pipeline is a 12 MB download that runs locally after the first visit.

The two sliders are worth understanding. A low threshold keeps more of the frame as "person", which helps when the model loses your hair or a hand and cuts a chunk out of you; push it too low and bits of the chair come along. A high threshold is stricter, so stray background disappears but so may a wispy fringe. Softness is a separate decision: zero gives a hard, cut-paper edge, which is what you want for a flat colour backdrop; twenty or thirty melts the edge into a blurred background so the seam is invisible, which is what the video call apps do. Try zero on the Transparent view to see exactly what the model decided.

Why the edge crawls. The model works at a fixed low resolution and has no memory of the previous frame, so an edge that sits right on the threshold flickers as the camera's noise tips it one way then the other. Even lighting helps more than any slider; a lamp behind you so your outline contrasts with the wall helps most of all. A busy background with skin-tone colours — a wooden bookcase, a beige sofa — is the hardest case, and a plain wall the easiest, which is why the people whose blur looks perfect on calls usually have one.

Snap and the alpha channel. The PNG that Snap saves is the canvas as drawn, so with Blur, Colour or Image selected it is an ordinary opaque picture. With Transparent selected the canvas really is transparent behind you, and the PNG keeps that: drop it into a slide, a design tool or the transparent PNG tool and the background is genuinely gone, not painted white. This is the quickest way to get a cut-out of yourself without touching an image editor.

Performance. The segmenter is the lightest of the MediaPipe vision models and runs at camera frame rate on a 2018 laptop; the blur is the expensive part, because the browser blurs the full-resolution frame. If the preview stutters, reduce Blur strength or switch to Colour, both of which skip that step. On a phone the front camera is used and everything works the same, though the first load is noticeably longer on mobile data.

FAQ

Can I use this as my background in Zoom or Teams?

Not directly — a browser tab cannot present itself as a camera to other applications. Zoom, Teams and Meet all have their own blur and replace features, which use models very like this one. What this page is for is trying backgrounds, grabbing a cut-out photo of yourself, or recording a snap with a clean backdrop without installing anything.

Why is my hair or hand missing?

The model marks pixels it is unsure about below 0.5, and thin hair, fingers against a similar-coloured wall and anything moving fast are exactly the pixels it is unsure about. Lower the Edge threshold to 35 or 40 to keep more of them, and raise Edge softness so the uncertain fringe fades rather than cuts.

Does the background photo get uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser into an image object and drawn onto the canvas; it never leaves the page. The same is true of the camera stream and the snap you download.

Why does the first start take a few seconds?

The segmentation model and the WebAssembly runtime that runs it are about 12 MB and are fetched the first time you press Start. Your browser caches them, so later visits start almost immediately.

Can I remove the background from a photo instead of the camera?

Yes — the photo background remover uses the same model on a single chosen image, keeps the photo's full resolution, and saves a transparent PNG or a flat-colour version, all without the file leaving your browser.
