How the Reading Time By Word Count works

This page answers how long to read 1000 words, or any count. You know the word count, you do not have the text, and you want to know how long it takes to read. Type the number and the readout gives the silent reading time and the read-aloud time, plus a page estimate. The table below runs the same sum for every common length from 250 to 10,000 words, so you can see at a glance that 1,000 words is a four-minute read and 5,000 words is a twenty-minute one. If you have the text itself, the reading time tool counts it for you.

How long to read 1000 words: getting a good result

A reading time estimate turns an abstract word count into something a reader can plan around. "A 6-minute read" at the top of an article sets an expectation, and a reader who knows what they are signing up for is more likely to start the piece now rather than save it for a later that never comes. Writers use the same figure the other way round: a speech slot, a podcast segment or a lesson plan is measured in minutes, and the word count is how you hit it.

How reading time by word count is worked out

The formula is simple: minutes = words ÷ words per minute. For read-aloud time you divide by a speaking rate instead of a silent reading rate. Pages come from the same count: words ÷ 275 for a double-spaced manuscript page, words ÷ 550 for a single-spaced page.

Worked example 1. A 1,800-word blog post at the average silent rate of 238 words a minute takes 1,800 ÷ 238 = 7.56 minutes, about 7 minutes 34 seconds. Most sites round that to "8 min read".

Worked example 2. A best-man speech drafted at 1,000 words, read aloud at 150 words a minute, runs 1,000 ÷ 150 = 6.67 minutes, about 6 minutes 40 seconds. If the slot is five minutes, cut to roughly 750 words.

Where the speed figures come from

Reading speed is one of the better-measured facts about people. A 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert pooled 190 studies and put the average adult silent reading rate for English non-fiction at 238 words a minute, with fiction a little faster at 260. That is the default here, and it has replaced the older, inflated 300 wpm figure that many blogging platforms still use. Medium, for example, bases its read-time labels on 265 wpm. A careful reader working through technical material drops to 150 or lower, and a practised reader skimming familiar prose reaches 400 without losing much. Claims of 1,000 wpm and above belong to skimming, not reading; comprehension tests show understanding falls sharply beyond about 500.

Reading aloud settles at around 150 to 160 words a minute for an adult, because the voice cannot keep up with the eye. Audiobook narrators usually work at 150 to 160, broadcast news runs near 160 to 180, a TED talk averages about 165, and a bedtime story is nearer 120. The same 1,000 words that takes about four minutes to read silently takes nearly seven to read to someone.

Where it is used

Publishers put the estimate on article cards; teachers use it to set homework that fits a lesson; conference organisers ask for a talk "of about 2,000 words" for a 15-minute slot; accessibility guidance encourages telling readers how long a long page will take. Podcasters and video makers convert scripts to runtime with the aloud figure, and students use the page estimate to check an essay against a page limit. The table below covers the lengths people ask about most, from 250 to 10,000 words, and re-runs whenever you change the speeds, so you can read off how many minutes any common length takes without doing the sums.

Expert tips and pitfalls

Treat technical text as a lower bound. Legal text, scientific papers and documentation are read at half the speed of a news story. Tables, code and images add time without adding words, so the real figure for a tutorial may be double the estimate.

Round up for labels, down for speeches. A read-time label that is too short frustrates readers; a speech that runs long gets cut off. Round the silent figure up to the next minute and give the aloud figure a margin of ten percent for pauses, laughter and slides.

Pages are a rough guide. Fonts, margins and headings move the words per page by twenty percent either way, which is why editors count words rather than pages. A 12-point double-spaced page holds about 275 words; a single-spaced one about 550.

Know your audience. Children, second-language readers and people reading on a phone in a noisy place are slower. For a general audience the average adult setting is right; for a specialist report, choose Slow or careful.

How to read the result

The silent line is the time for an average reader at the speed you chose, formatted as minutes and seconds. The aloud line uses your speaking rate and is the figure to plan a talk, a voice-over or a reading around. The two page lines are for manuscripts and printed handouts. If you have the text itself rather than a count, the reading time tool in the related links counts the words for you, and the speaking time tool is built around the aloud figure.

FAQ

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About four minutes and twelve seconds for an average adult reading silently at 238 words a minute, and around six minutes and forty seconds read aloud at 150. A slow, careful reader takes closer to seven minutes silently.

How long does it take to read 5,000 words?

Roughly twenty-one minutes silently at the average rate, and about thirty-three minutes aloud. A 5,000-word piece is the length of a long magazine feature or a short-story chapter, and a fast reader gets through it in a little over twelve minutes.

How long does it take to read 10,000 words?

About forty-two minutes at 238 words a minute, an hour and seven minutes aloud at 150, and around twenty-five minutes for a fast reader at 400. Ten thousand words is a novelette or a substantial report chapter, so plan for a sitting rather than a coffee break.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About four pages double spaced or two pages single spaced in a standard 12-point font with normal margins. Larger type, wide margins or lots of headings push the count up, so word count is the more reliable measure.

Why is my reading speed different?

Because 238 is an average across many readers and many texts. Difficult material, a second language, note-taking and fatigue all slow reading; familiarity and skimming speed it up. Time yourself on a known word count once and choose the preset that is closest, or use the reading time tool with your own text.
