How the Days Until Christmas works
See how many days until Christmas from today, with a live countdown to midnight on 25 December, the weekday Christmas Day falls on, and the number of sleeps for anyone counting down with children. Pick another date to count from if you are planning ahead.
How the days until Christmas are counted
The formula is Christmas Day minus the date you count from, in whole days. If 25 December has already passed this year, the count moves on to next year. The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of Christmas Day in your own time zone.
Worked examples
For example, from 30 September 2026 there are 86 days until Christmas, which is 12 weeks and 2 days. As a second example, from 1 December the count is 24 days, which is why Advent calendars have 24 doors.
Sleeps until Christmas
Children usually count sleeps rather than days. The number of sleeps is the same as the number of days: on Christmas Eve there is one sleep left, and on Christmas Day the count reaches zero.
How many days until Christmas each year?
Christmas moves one weekday later each year, or two after a leap day. The table lists the weekday of Christmas Day for the next 25 years.

FAQ
When is Christmas this year?
Christmas Day is 25 December every year in the Western calendar. The calculator shows which weekday it falls on. Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar celebrate on 7 January, which this countdown does not cover.
How many weeks until Christmas?
Divide the days by seven. The calculator shows the answer as weeks and days, so 86 days reads as 12 weeks and 2 days. Once you are inside the last four weeks, Advent has usually begun.
Does the countdown use my time zone?
Yes. Leave the date empty and the countdown runs to midnight on 25 December on your own device clock, so it reaches zero when Christmas Day starts where you are, not in any other country.
