How the World Clock works

This world clock shows the live time in every city you add, side by side, on a world map that shades the half of the planet in darkness right now. Each city gets its own colour on the map and its own card saying how far ahead or behind you it is, whether people there are at work or asleep, and when its clocks next change for daylight saving.

A list of clocks answers "what time is it there". It does not answer the questions that usually follow: is it a sensible time to call, is it dark, and will the gap be the same next month.

World clock with a map, not just a list

The map draws each city's time zone as a coloured band, so you can see at a glance that Mumbai sits half an hour off the usual grid and that China runs one clock across five bands' worth of land. The shaded region is real night, worked out from the sun's position for this minute, with twilight as a softer edge — useful when the clock says 6 pm but you want to know whether it is still light.

Look ahead without doing arithmetic

Drag the slider to move every clock and the map forward or back by up to twelve hours. That is the quickest way to answer "if I call at 4 pm my time, where will they be?" without converting anything by hand. For a proper hour-by-hour plan across several people, the meeting planner lays every city out on one grid.

Daylight saving is shown per city

Every card shows the next date that city's clocks change, and by how much. Northern and southern hemispheres change at opposite times of year and many places never change at all, so the gap between two cities moves up to four times a year. Your cities are kept in this browser and can be shared as a link, so a team can open the same set.

FAQ

Where does the world clock get the time from?

From your device's clock, converted using the time zone rules built into your browser. Those rules come from the IANA time zone database, which is what phones, servers and operating systems use, so daylight saving changes are applied on the right dates without any lookup.

Why is a city's time zone band not a straight strip?

The bands on the map are drawn by UTC offset, a straight strip fifteen degrees wide for each hour. Real borders bend around countries, so a city can sit outside its band. China, India and Argentina are good examples of countries whose clocks do not match the sun.

Can I save my cities?

Yes. The list is stored in this browser and comes back next time you open the page. Copy link puts the list in the address so you can bookmark it or send it to someone else, who will see the same cities in the same order on their own clock.

What do working hours, early, evening and night mean on each card?

Working hours are 9 am to 5 pm local time. Early covers 6 am to 9 am, evening is 5 pm to 10 pm and night is everything else. It is a rough guide to whether a call will land well, not a statement about any particular person's day.
