How the Add Working Days To A Date works

Add working days to a date, or subtract them, skipping weekends and the public holidays for your region. The result shows the date you land on and which holidays were skipped.

The formula. Step forward one day at a time, counting only Monday-to-Friday dates that are not public holidays, until the count is reached. For example, 5 working days from Monday 21 September 2026 is Monday 28 September, 7 calendar days on. A second example: 10 working days lands on Monday 5 October, 14 calendar days on, with no holidays in the way. Each holiday in the range pushes the result one working day further, and the readout shows how many were skipped.

"Working days" or "business days" means Monday to Friday excluding public holidays. Ten working days from a Monday is not ten days later; it is two full weeks later, and a bank holiday in between pushes it to the Tuesday. That is the sum this page does, and it does it both ways: a delivery promised in five working days, a notice period counted in business days, a statutory deadline such as the 14 working days for a complaint response, or a contract that says something must be done "not less than 20 business days before".

How the count works. The start date itself is not counted. The calculator steps one day at a time in the chosen direction, skipping any Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, and stops when it has passed the requested number of working days. If the start date is itself a weekend or holiday, counting begins from the next qualifying day in the direction of travel, which is the convention used by most courts and contracts. When the number is zero, the result is the start date itself.

Which holidays are skipped. The regions list covers the four UK nations (which differ: Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew's Day but no Easter Monday, and Northern Ireland adds St Patrick's Day and 12 July), Ireland, the United States federal calendar, Canadian federal holidays, New Zealand including Matariki, and Australia nationally plus each state and territory. Where a holiday falls on a weekend the substitute day is used, so Christmas Day on a Saturday is skipped on the following Monday rather than on the Saturday. In the United States a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before.

What is not skipped. Regional and local holidays below the level listed, such as Australian show days, Canadian provincial days, US state holidays, and company shutdowns, are not in the calendar. If your contract or organisation treats such days as non-working, add them to the working-day count manually or use the working days between two dates calculator, which has a box for extra days off.

Checking a deadline. For a deadline that says "within N working days of" an event, set the event date as the start and add N. The result is the last day on which the action is on time. For "at least N working days before", set the target date as the start, choose Subtract and read off the latest date you can act.

FAQ

What is 10 working days from today?

Ten working days is two calendar weeks if no public holiday falls inside them, so from a Monday it is the Monday a fortnight later. Set today as the start date and 10 as the number, pick your region, and the readout gives the exact date and any holiday that pushed it back.

Is the start date counted as a working day?

No. Counting starts with the first working day after the start date when adding, or the first working day before it when subtracting. This matches the usual legal and contractual convention that "within 5 working days of Monday" runs to the following Monday, not the Friday.

Does the calculator use substitute bank holidays?

Yes. When a fixed-date holiday such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekend, the working day it moves to is the one that is skipped. For the United States the federal rule of observing a Saturday holiday on the Friday before is applied instead.

Which regions are covered?

England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the United States federal calendar, Canadian federal holidays, New Zealand, and Australia both nationally and by state and territory. Sub-regional days such as local show days are not included, so treat those as an extra day to add by hand.

How far ahead can I count?

Any number of working days. The holiday calendar is generated by rule for every year, including Easter, so counting 250 working days forward crosses into the following year correctly. The only fixed table is Matariki in New Zealand, which is set by the Māori lunar calendar and is included for 2024 to 2033.
