How the Working Days In A Month And Year works

This page lists the working days in a month for each region. Choose a country or region and a year, and the table lists the working days in every month, that is Monday to Friday with public holidays removed, alongside the same month in the following year. The readout totals the year, counts the public holidays that landed on weekdays, gives the average working days a month and turns the total into working hours at whatever daily figure you enter. It is the number behind monthly salary accruals, capacity planning, day-rate budgets and "how many days until the end of the month" questions.

Working days in a month: weekdays minus holidays

A year has 365 or 366 days, of which 104 or 105 are weekends. In England and Wales eight bank holidays usually land on weekdays, leaving 253 working days in 2026. Scotland and Northern Ireland have nine and ten respectively, the United States eleven federal holidays, and Australian states between eight and thirteen depending on the state, so the same year can contain anything from about 250 to 255 working days depending on where the desk is.

Why the monthly figure moves. Months have 28 to 31 days and start on different weekdays, so a month can have anywhere from 19 to 23 working days before holidays are considered. Once holidays come off, April and May in the UK typically drop to 20 or 21 and December to 21 or 22. That variation is why a salaried employee's daily rate is normally set on the annual figure (salary divided by 260, 253 or 252 depending on policy) rather than on the actual days in the month, and why day-rate contractors earn noticeably less in a month with two bank holidays.

Substitute days. When a fixed-date holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday (and Tuesday if two collide) becomes the holiday instead, and the calculator counts it in the month it actually falls. In 2027, for example, Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday, so the substitutes are Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December and December loses two working days as it would in any other year. The US federal calendar observes a Saturday holiday on the Friday before, which can occasionally pull a holiday into the previous month.

Working hours. Multiply the working-day total by the hours in your standard day and you have the hours available in the year before holiday and sickness. At 7.5 hours a day 253 days is 1,897.5 hours; at 8 hours it is 2,024. Take off annual leave, typically 25 days, and you have the productive hours a rate card or utilisation target should be built on. The salary to hourly calculator does the conversion the other way, from an annual salary to an hourly rate.

Next year alongside. The second column exists because most planning happens for a year that has not started. Comparing the two shows where the months differ, for example when a leap year adds a working day in February or when Easter moves between March and April.

Working days worked examples

The formula: working days = weekdays in the month − public holidays that fall on a weekday.

First example. October 2026 has 22 weekdays. In New South Wales Labour Day falls on Monday 5 October, leaving 21 working days.

Second example. December 2026 has 23 weekdays. Christmas is a Friday and Boxing Day a Saturday, so most Australian states move the Boxing Day holiday to Monday 28 December, leaving 21 working days.

How many working days in a year? About 250 to 252 in most Australian states, once the national and state holidays are taken out.

FAQ

How many working days are in 2026 in the UK?

253 in England and Wales: 365 days less 104 weekend days and 8 weekday bank holidays. Scotland has 252 and Northern Ireland 251, because they have one and two extra bank holidays. Ireland has 251, with all ten of its public holidays landing on weekdays in 2026.

How many working days are in a month on average?

About 21, from 253 working days divided by 12. Individual months range from 19 to 23 depending on their length, which weekday they start on and whether a public holiday falls inside them, which is why the table gives each month separately.

Do you count substitute bank holidays?

Yes. A holiday that falls on a weekend is moved to the next available weekday under the rules of each country, and that weekday is the one removed from the count, in the month it actually falls. The United States is handled differently, observing a Saturday holiday on the Friday before.

How many working hours are in a year?

It depends on the working day: 253 days at 7.5 hours is 1,897.5 hours, and at 8 hours is 2,024. Enter your own hours a day in the box and the readout gives the figure for the chosen region and year, before annual leave is deducted.

What about part-time or four-day weeks?

The table counts Monday to Friday. For a four-day week, multiply the monthly figure by 0.8 as a rough guide, or count the specific weekday you do not work using the working days between two dates calculator, which lets you enter extra non-working days.
