How the Bed Size Calculator works

This bed size chart gives the mattress dimensions for every common bed in the UK, the US, Europe and Australia. Pick a size to see its width and length in centimetres and inches, the width each sleeper gets and the nearest equivalent size in the other three regions, which matters when you buy bedding abroad or online.

Bed names are not the same everywhere. A UK king (150 × 200 cm) is close to a US queen (152 × 203 cm), while a US king (193 × 203 cm) is nearer a UK super king (180 × 200 cm). Sheets and duvets follow the local names, so a "king" fitted sheet bought in one country may not fit a "king" mattress from another.

How to read the bed size chart

The width per sleeper is the mattress width divided by two for a double or larger, and the formula for the smallest comfortable room is width + 2 × 60 cm by length + 75 cm, which leaves room to walk round the bed and make it. For example, a UK double at 135 × 190 cm suits a room of at least 255 × 265 cm. A second example: a US California king is 183 × 213 cm, longer and narrower than a standard US king, so it suits tall sleepers.

A single adult sleeper takes up about 75–90 cm (30–36 in) of width. That is why two adults often find a UK double (67 cm each) tight and move up to a king or super king. To check how many centimetres of headroom you have in a small room, compare the room size with that formula, and remember the bed frame adds 5–15 cm to the mattress size.

FAQ

What is the difference between a queen and a king bed?

In the US a queen is 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm) and a king is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm), so the king is 16 inches wider but the same length. In the UK there is no queen; the king is 150 × 200 cm, which is roughly a US queen.

Is a UK double the same as a US full?

Nearly. A UK double is 135 × 190 cm (53 × 75 in) and a US full is 137 × 191 cm (54 × 75 in). Sheets are usually interchangeable, but check the depth of fitted sheets because mattress thickness varies more than width and length between brands.

What size bed fits in a small bedroom?

Allow the mattress plus about 60 cm on each side you need to reach and 75 cm at the foot. A room under 3 × 3 m usually suits a double or small double; a king needs a room of around 2.7 × 2.75 m at the very least, and more if wardrobes open towards the bed.
