How the Furniture Dimensions Calculator works

This furniture dimensions tool gives the standard size of a sofa, dining table, bed, desk or wardrobe and checks whether it fits the space you have. Enter the width and depth available in centimetres or inches, pick the piece, and it shows the typical footprint, the footprint with walking and opening clearance, and a fits or does-not-fit verdict.

Furniture that fits the floor can still make a room unusable if there is no room to pull out a chair, open a wardrobe door or walk round a bed. Designers plan with clearance zones: about 45 cm (18 in) in front of a sofa to a coffee table, 90 cm (36 in) behind a dining chair so it can be pulled out, and 60 cm (24 in) down each side of a bed.

How the furniture dimensions check works

The formula adds the clearance to the typical size: space needed = item width and depth + the clearance on the sides that need it. For example, a dining table for six is typically 180 × 90 cm; with 90 cm all round it needs 360 × 270 cm of floor. A second example: a three-seat sofa at 210 × 90 cm with 45 cm in front needs 210 × 135 cm.

If your space is between the bare size and the size with clearance, the result says it is a squeeze: it will go in, but chairs or doors will be tight. Sizes vary between makers, so measure the actual piece before you buy, and check doorways, stair turns and lifts on the route in, which is often where a sofa gets stuck.

To see how many seats a table gives, allow about 60 cm (24 in) of edge per diner. A 180 cm table seats six with one at each end, and a 240 cm table seats eight.

FAQ

What size dining table seats six people?

A rectangular table of about 180 × 90 cm (72 × 36 in) seats six comfortably, with 60 cm of edge for each person. A round table of 120–135 cm diameter also seats six. Leave 90 cm behind each chair so people can sit down and get up.

How much space do you need around a bed?

Allow at least 60 cm (24 in) down each side of a bed so you can get in and make it, and about 75 cm (30 in) at the foot. In a tight room you can drop one side to 45 cm if the bed is pushed against a wall that nobody needs to reach.

How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the door opening width and height, and the diagonal depth of the sofa from the back top corner to the front of the seat. If the diagonal depth is less than the door width, the sofa can usually be tilted through, even if its overall depth is greater.
