How the Grade Calculator works
This grade calculator turns the points you scored on a test, quiz or assignment into a percentage, a letter grade on the standard US scale and grade points on a 4.0 scale, and shows how close you were to the next grade.
How the grade calculator works
The formula for the percentage is points scored ÷ points available × 100. The letter grade uses the common US scale: 93% and up is an A, 90% an A-, 87% a B+, 83% a B and so on down to 60% for a D-, with anything below 60% an F. If you enter a weight, the task's contribution to the course is the percentage × the weight ÷ 100.
First example. 43 out of 50 is 86%, a B worth 3.0 grade points. Half a point more would have reached 87%, a B+. If the test is worth 20% of the course, it adds 17.2 of those 20 points.
Second example. 71 out of 80 is 88.75%, a B+ worth 3.3 grade points. One more point, 72 of 80, would have been 90% and an A-.
How many grading scales are there? Several. Some schools use 90/80/70/60 cut-offs without plus and minus grades, so check your syllabus if the letter matters.

FAQ
How do I calculate my grade as a percentage?
Divide the points you scored by the points available and multiply by 100. 38 out of 45 is 38 ÷ 45 × 100 = 84.4%.
What letter grade is 85%?
On the standard US scale, 85% is a B (83% to 86.99%). On a straight 90/80/70/60 scale it is also a B. Half a point more on a 100-point test would not reach a B+.
What percentage is a B+?
A B+ is usually 87% to 89.99%, worth 3.3 grade points on a 4.0 scale. Schools that skip plus and minus grades count it as a plain B worth 3.0.
How do I work out my course grade from several tasks?
Multiply each task's percentage by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. The final grade calculator does this and also shows what you need on the final exam.
Does the calculator round my grade?
No. It shows the exact percentage to two decimal places. Many teachers round 89.5% up to 90%, but that is a class policy, not part of the scale.
