How the SAT and ACT Score Calculator works

This SAT and ACT score calculator adds your two SAT section scores into a total, averages your ACT section scores into a composite, and converts each test to the other with the official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance tables, for an SAT to ACT conversion either way.

How the SAT to ACT conversion and score calculator works

The formula for an SAT total is the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score plus the Math score, each from 200 to 800. An ACT composite is the average of the section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number with halves rounding up. Since April 2025 the ACT composite uses English, Math and Reading only; before that it also included Science. The conversions come from the SAT to ACT concordance published jointly by ACT and the College Board.

First example. An SAT of 650 ERW and 700 Math is a 1350 total. The concordance puts that at an ACT composite of 29, an ACT Math of 30 and an ACT English + Reading of 57 out of 72.

Second example. ACT scores of 28 English, 30 Math and 31 Reading average 29.67, a composite of 30. That matches an SAT total of 1370 (range 1360–1380), and ACT Math 30 matches SAT Math 700. On the older four-test format, 24, 26, 25 and 22 average 24.25 for a composite of 24, about SAT 1180.

How many points off can a conversion be? A few. A concordance links scores that rank students at the same percentile, so treat it as a guide. Colleges that accept both tests use these same tables.

FAQ

How is the ACT composite score calculated?

Add the section scores and divide by the number of sections, then round to the nearest whole number, with .5 rounding up. Since April 2025 that is English, Math and Reading; Science is reported separately.

Is a 1350 SAT the same as a 29 ACT?

Yes, by the official concordance. An SAT total of 1350 sits at the same percentile as an ACT composite of 29. Both put a student at about the top tenth of test takers.

Why does the concordance stop at SAT 590 and ACT 9?

Too few students score below those levels on both tests to link them reliably, so ACT and the College Board did not publish equivalents for them.

Does the digital SAT use the same conversion?

Yes. The College Board kept the 400–1600 scale for the digital SAT, and the 2018 concordance is still the official table for comparing it with the ACT.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Take a practice test of each, convert both with this calculator, and focus on the one where your equivalent score is higher. Most colleges accept either with no preference.
