How the Battlestar-style Name Generator works

A Battlestar name generator for Colonial Viper pilots, fleet officers, civilians from the Twelve Colonies, battlestars and Cylons. Pilots come with a callsign, officers with a ship, and civilians with a home colony like Caprica or Tauron. Pick a kind and fill a squadron, a bridge or a basestar.

How the Battlestar name generator works

Battlestar Galactica, in its 2004 reimagining, gives its humans ordinary modern names with a military edge: Kara Thrace, Lee Adama, Saul Tigh, Felix Gaeta. Pilots are known by their callsigns, often ironic or earned in an embarrassing incident: Starbuck, Apollo, Boomer, Hotdog. The generator pairs a first and last name with a callsign in that spirit, mixing show names with new ones.

    Battlestars and the Twelve Colonies

Battlestars take names from Greek myth, astronomy and history: Galactica, Pegasus, Atlantia, Valkyrie. The Twelve Colonies of Kobol are named after the zodiac, so a civilian comes from Caprica, Picon, Gemenon or another colony. That gives a character a background at once.

    Cylons

The humanoid Cylons are numbered models, with Number Six and Number Eight the best known, and each model has many copies living under human names. The generator gives a model number and a human cover name, or a Centurion designation for the robots. This site is not affiliated with NBCUniversal.

    FAQ

    How do Battlestar callsigns work?

Callsigns are nicknames given by fellow pilots, not chosen by the pilot. They often come from a joke, a mistake or a family name: Apollo from Lee Adama's hotshot image, Hotdog from being a showoff. The generator picks a callsign independent of the name.

    What are the Twelve Colonies?

The Twelve Colonies are the human home worlds in Battlestar Galactica, each named after a sign of the zodiac: Caprica for Capricorn, Picon for Pisces, Gemenon for Gemini, and so on. Each colony has its own culture and accent, useful for a character's background.

Are these Battlestar names from the show?

Some first names, surnames, callsigns and ship names come from the show, and the rest are new names in the same style. Mix them for your own characters, or reroll until a pilot sounds right for your squadron.

Can I use these names in a Battlestar tabletop game?

Yes. They suit the Battlestar Galactica RPG, board game campaigns, fan fiction and any fleet on the run from machines. Generate a squadron of pilots, a bridge crew and a Cylon agent hidden among them for a ready cast.
