How the Bengali Name Generator works
This Bengali name generator gives names from the Bengali-speaking world of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, with Hindu names such as Arnab Mukherjee and Muslim names such as Tanvir Hossain. Use it for characters, baby name ideas and learning how Bengali names are formed.
How the Bengali name generator builds names
Bengali names split along religious lines. Hindu Bengalis use Sanskrit-rooted first names, many of them poetic, such as Brishti, rain, and Indranil, sapphire, with surnames that often mark caste or lineage: Chatterjee, Banerjee and Mukherjee are anglicised Brahmin names, while Bose, Ghosh, Dutta and Mitra are Kayastha names. Muslim Bengalis, the majority in Bangladesh, use Arabic and Persian first names with surnames or titles such as Chowdhury, Rahman and Hossain.
Md., Akter and Begum
Many Bangladeshi men write Md., short for Mohammad, before their given name, as a mark of respect rather than a name they go by. Women's names often include Akter, Begum, Sultana or Khanam as a second element, which works more like a title than a family name. The generator includes these forms so the results look like real names on a Dhaka class list.

FAQ
What are common Bengali surnames?
Common Hindu Bengali surnames include Das, Roy, Ghosh, Sen, Bose, Banerjee, Chatterjee and Mukherjee. Common Bangladeshi Muslim surnames include Rahman, Hossain, Islam, Ahmed, Khan and Chowdhury.
Do Bengalis use nicknames?
Yes. Almost every Bengali has a daak naam, a pet name used by family and friends, alongside the bhalo naam, the formal name. A boy called Arnab might be Bapi at home his whole life.
Why are Chatterjee and Banerjee spelled that way?
They are British-era spellings of Chattopadhyay and Bandyopadhyay, Brahmin family names. Both forms are still in use, and the longer original forms are often preferred in formal Bengali writing.
