How the Elite Dangerous-style System Name Generator works

An Elite Dangerous system name generator for procedural sector codes, catalogue stars, named systems, stations and fleet carriers. Most of the galaxy's four hundred billion systems carry a coded sector name, and the rest take real star catalogue numbers or the names of the people who settled them. Pick a kind and plot a jump.

How the Elite Dangerous system name generator works

Elite Dangerous models the whole Milky Way, so almost every system is named by a formula rather than by hand. A procedural name has a made-up sector name, two letters, a dash, a letter, a mass code from a to h and two numbers, like Synoerd FG-Y d14-7. The sector name comes from syllable tables, the letters locate the system in a cube of space, and the mass code says how big a star it is. This generator builds names in the same shape.

    Catalogue stars and settled space

Near Earth the game uses real astronomical catalogues, so systems are called HIP, HD, Gliese, LHS, Ross or Wolf with a number. Colonised systems get proper names, and their stations and outposts are usually named after a person, like Varga Hub or Okafor Orbital. Player fleet carriers have a code of the form K7N-2QX and a name the owner chooses.

    Not affiliated

Elite Dangerous is owned by Frontier Developments. This site is not affiliated with it. Catalogue prefixes are real astronomy conventions and every name here is generated, so they will not all match real systems in the game.

    FAQ

What do the codes in Elite Dangerous system names mean?

In a name like Synoerd FG-Y d14-7, the first word is the sector, the letter pair and dash locate a cube of space within it, the lower-case letter is the mass code from a (smallest stars) to h (largest), and the numbers pick out one system in that cube. The generator follows the same order.

What do HIP, HD and Gliese mean?

They are real star catalogues. HIP is Hipparcos, a satellite survey; HD is the Henry Draper catalogue; Gliese is a catalogue of nearby stars. Elite Dangerous uses them for real stars near the Sol bubble, and the generator gives catalogue names with realistic number lengths.

How do I name my fleet carrier?

A carrier has a fixed code like K7N-2QX and a name you choose, and players tend to go for something dry, funny or wistful, such as Stubborn Mule or Tritium Dreams. Pick Fleet carrier for names in that style, shown with a code in brackets the way the game displays them.

Can I use these names for my own sci-fi setting?

Yes. The procedural and catalogue styles make a setting feel huge and real, while the named systems and stations give the populated core. Mix them: a handful of named systems surrounded by coded ones makes a map look like a real frontier.
