How the Evangelion-style Name Generator works

An Evangelion name generator for Children who pilot the Evas, the Eva units themselves, Angels and NERV staff. Pilots get Japanese names and a Child designation, Evas get unit numbers, and Angels get names from Judeo-Christian angelology with a virtue or number. Pick a kind and report to Tokyo-3.

How the Evangelion name generator works

Neon Genesis Evangelion names its pilots, the Children, by order of selection: Rei Ayanami is the First Child, Asuka the Second, Shinji the Third. The generator pairs a Japanese given name and surname with a Child number or a unit assignment. Many Evangelion surnames are borrowed from World War II Japanese warships, and the name tables echo that practice.

    Evas and Angels

Eva units are numbered from Unit-00 upward, with later films adding Mark.06 and others. Angels are named after angels from Jewish and Christian tradition, most ending in -el, meaning god: Sachiel, Ramiel, Israfel, Zeruel. The generator builds new angel names from the same parts and pairs each with a virtue or domain, as angelology does.

    FAQ

What is a Child in Evangelion?

A Child is a pilot chosen by the Marduk Institute to synchronise with an Evangelion. They are numbered in the order they were selected: First, Second, Third, and so on. All of them were born after Second Impact, which is part of their significance.

Why do Evangelion Angels end in -el?

Their names come from angels in Jewish and Christian writings, where -el means God and appears at the end of most angelic names: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael. Each Evangelion Angel carries the name of an angel associated with a quality, like Sachiel with water.

What are the Eva unit numbers?

Units are numbered in production order: Unit-00 is the prototype, Unit-01 the test type and Unit-02 the first production model. Units 03 to 13 appear across the series and films. The generator picks a unit number and can add a model type or colour.

Can I use these names for Evangelion OCs?

Yes. They suit original characters, fan fiction and mecha role-playing. Generate a new Child with a unit, an Angel to fight and a NERV officer to give orders, and you have a complete episode.
