How the Fallout-style Name Generator (Vault Dweller, Raider, Ghoul) works

A Fallout name generator for vault dwellers, raiders, ghouls, Brotherhood of Steel knights and wasteland folk. Vault dwellers come with a vault number and job, raiders with nicknames and gangs, and ghouls with the jobs they held before the bombs fell. Pick a kind and step out into the wasteland.

How the Fallout name generator works

Fallout pairs 1950s American optimism with a post-nuclear wasteland, and its names do both. Vault dwellers have wholesome mid-century names like Nora, Nate and Betty, and a vault number, often with a job in the vault's staff. Raiders use nicknames: Skinny Malone, Mad Mags, Two-Tooth. Ghouls lived through the war, so they are often named with a pre-war job, which is the source of a lot of Fallout's dark comedy.

    Brotherhood and wastelanders

The Brotherhood of Steel uses military-religious ranks: Scribe, Initiate, Knight, Paladin and Elder. Wastelanders come from settlements like Megaton, Diamond City and Shady Sands, and often have a trade and a colourful nickname. The generator gives each kind the rank, home or background that fits it.

    FAQ

How do I name a Fallout character?

For a vault dweller, pick a plain 1950s name and a vault number. For a raider, lean on a nickname. For a ghoul, think about who they were before the war. The generator follows these patterns so your character fits straight into the Fallout world.

What are the Brotherhood of Steel ranks?

The main Brotherhood ranks rise from Aspirant and Initiate to Knight, Knight-Captain, Paladin and Elder, with Scribes as the research branch. The generator gives Brotherhood characters one of these ranks, with a surname, as they are usually addressed.

Why do ghouls have pre-war jobs?

Ghouls are people who survived the Great War of 2077 and have lived for two centuries since. Many still identify with their pre-war jobs, like a mailman who still delivers mail. The generator gives ghouls a pre-war job for that bittersweet effect.

Can I use these names in the Fallout tabletop game?

Yes. They suit Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, mods and fan fiction. Generate a vault dweller party, a raider gang to fight and a ghoul trader with stories to tell.
