How the Firefly-style Name Generator works
A Firefly name generator for a frontier sci-fi western. Get crew with pioneer names and border-world homes, ships for smuggling and salvage, Alliance officers from the core worlds, Companions and Reaver ships. Pick a kind and put together a crew that keeps flying.
How the Firefly name generator works
Firefly mixes the American frontier with a Chinese-influenced future. Names blend old-west first names, like Jubal, Jayne, Zoe and Malcolm, with ordinary surnames and a sprinkling of Chinese given names like Mei-Lin. Crew come with a home on a border or rim world such as Shadow, Whitefall or Persephone, which says a lot about their past, and many are veterans of the losing Browncoat side of the Unification War.
Ships, Alliance and Companions
Firefly ships have hopeful, battered names, like Serenity, and the generator builds names in that spirit, with a ship class. Alliance officers carry naval ranks, and their cruisers are named IAV. Companions are registered courtesans from the core worlds, where the Guild Houses are. Reaver ships have no official names; the generator gives the names frontier folk call them.

Firefly and Serenity are owned by 20th Century Studios. This site is not affiliated with them. The names are for fan fiction, tabletop games and your own space westerns.
FAQ
What is a Browncoat?
Browncoats were the Independent soldiers who fought against the Alliance in the Unification War and lost. In Firefly, Mal and Zoe are Browncoat veterans, and fans of the show adopted the name. The generator marks some crew as ex-Browncoats for instant backstory.
How are Firefly ships named?
Ships in Firefly are named by their owners, and the names reflect hope, humour or stubbornness, like Serenity, named after the battle Mal lost. The generator makes names in the same spirit and adds a class, with the Firefly class itself common for a small crew.
Why do Firefly names mix Chinese and Western elements?
The show imagines a future shaped by the two great powers of today, the United States and China, merging into the Alliance. Characters swear in Mandarin and the culture blends both. The generator reflects this with a mix of Chinese given names and frontier-style surnames.
Can I use these names in the Firefly RPG?
Yes. They suit the Firefly Role-Playing Game, Serenity RPG, fan fiction and any space western. Generate a crew, a ship and an Alliance officer on their tail, and the job almost writes itself.
