How the Klingon Name Generator works

A Klingon name generator for warriors, captains and the great houses of the Klingon Empire. Choose a bare given name, a name with lineage in the son of and daughter of style, or a name with a house. Names use the hard sounds of Klingon, with harsh consonants, gh and tlh, for the proper warrior feel.

How the Klingon name generator works

Klingon names are short and hard: Worf, Kurn, Gowron, Martok, Kor, Kang, Koloth. Women's names are often softer but still clipped: Lursa, B'Etor, Grilka, Sirella. The generator joins a harsh opening syllable with a Klingon style ending, so Kar and gath make Kargath, Mar and tagh make Martagh. Some endings include an apostrophe, the glottal stop Klingon uses heavily.

    Lineage and houses

A Klingon introduces themself by their father: I am Worf, son of Mogh. Honour passes through the house, a great family with seats on the High Council, and a disgraced house shames all its members. The With lineage form gives a son of or daughter of name, sometimes with a house too. The With house form gives a name and a house, with an optional rank such as General or Captain.

    Using Klingon names

Use them for Star Trek OCs, fan fiction and the Star Trek Adventures RPG, or for any warrior culture in your own science fiction. For other species, see the Star Trek name generator. This site is not affiliated with Paramount or CBS Studios.

    FAQ

    How do Klingons name themselves?

A Klingon gives their own name, then their father's, as in Worf, son of Mogh. Women may give their mother's or father's name. Many also name their house, since house honour is central to Klingon society. The generator produces all three forms.

What does the apostrophe mean in Klingon names?

In the Klingon language invented by Marc Okrand, the apostrophe is a glottal stop, the catch in the throat in uh-oh. Names like B'Etor and K'Ehleyr use it. The generator adds it to some names for an authentic look.

    Are these real Klingon words?

They are new names built from the sounds of canon Klingon names, not dictionary words. A few names come close to canon characters because they share syllables. For a real Klingon word meaning, check the Klingon Dictionary or the Klingon Language Institute.

Can I use these names in Star Trek Adventures?

Yes. They suit Star Trek Adventures characters, Klingon ship crews and houses for campaign politics. Generate a house name first, then a set of lineage names for the family members, and you have a full Klingon house ready to play.
