How the Pokémon-style Name Generator works

This Pokémon name generator makes fakemon names and Pokémon nicknames for original creatures. Every name is a portmanteau of an animal and a type, the way Charmander blends char and salamander, so Fire gives names like Emberlynx and Electric gives Voltoad. Pick a type, or leave it on Any for a mixed Pokédex, and use the results as nicknames for your own team.

How the Pokémon name generator builds portmanteaus

Most Pokémon names join two words: what the creature is and what it does. Bulbasaur is bulb and dinosaur, Squirtle is squirt and turtle, Pikachu is the Japanese pika (sparkle) and chu (squeak). The generator works the same way. It holds a list of animal roots and a list of type roots for each of twelve types, and joins them in either order, type then animal (Emberlynx) or animal then type (Foxflare). The roots are cut at points that keep the joined word pronounceable.

    Types and roots

Each type has its own vocabulary. Fire uses ember, blaze, cinder and scorch; Water uses aqua, tide and brine; Ghost uses shade, wisp and gloom; Steel uses iron, cog and rivet. Choosing a type means every name reads as that type at a glance, which is what a good Pokémon name does. For evolution lines, keep the animal root and swap to a bigger type word.

    Using the names

The names suit fakemon, fan games, Pokémon-inspired tabletop campaigns, and any monster-collecting game. Check a name against the official Pokédex before publishing, since a short portmanteau can occasionally match a real one. FAQ

Can I use these as Pokémon nicknames?

Yes. A type-blend name like Voltoad or Emberlynx makes a good nickname for a Pokémon you have caught, because it hints at the type without copying the species name. Recent games cap nicknames at 12 characters, so pick the shorter results.

    How are Pokémon names made?

Most are portmanteaus of two words describing the creature, often its animal and its type or signature move. Charizard is char and lizard, Jigglypuff is jiggle and puff. Many are also puns in Japanese, and the English names are localised to keep the joke working.

    What is a fakemon?

A fakemon is a fan-made Pokémon, designed by fans for art, fan games or tabletop play. Fakemon usually follow the official naming style, so a portmanteau generator is a quick way to name a whole regional Pokédex of original creatures.

How do I name an evolution line?

Keep one root constant and grow the other. A small Fire fox might be Emberkit, then Emberfox, then Blazefox. Official lines do this often: Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard all keep char. The generator's type roots make it easy to pick a bigger word for each stage.

Can I use these names for my own game?

Yes, for original creatures. The names are generated from common English roots. Avoid names that match an existing Pokémon, and avoid using the Pokémon brand itself in a commercial game, but a new monster called Voltoad is yours to use.
