How the 7th Sea Name Generator works

A 7th Sea name generator for swashbuckling adventure in a fantasy version of 17th-century Europe. In 7th Sea-style games, heroes duel, sail and scheme across nations modelled on England, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Russia and Scandinavia. Pick a nation style and generate heroes, villains and pirate captains.

How the 7th Sea name generator works

Each nation style uses real given names from its model culture and original, grand surnames. English-style names are stately, Arabella Blackmore. Spanish-style names use del and a place, Rodrigo del Monte Oro. German-style names use von and a castle-like surname. French-style names use du and elegant surnames. Italian-style names sound like merchant princes. Russian-style names use gendered surnames, and Norse-style names use patronymics. Pirate captains get a nickname.

    Nations by style

The generator describes nations by the real culture they are modelled on, so you can map them to the published setting or use them in any swashbuckling game.

    FAQ

What are the nations based on?

Each nation is a fantasy version of a real European culture from the 1600s, such as Spain or France. The names follow those cultures, so a Spanish-style hero sounds different from a Norse-style raider.

Why do some names use von, del or du?

These particles mean of or from and often marked noble families in German, Spanish and French names. They make a character sound aristocratic, which suits a game full of duelling nobles.

How do I name a swashbuckling pirate?

Give them a rank, a bold nickname and a strong surname, like Captain Gideon "Sea-Wolf" Fenwick. The nickname should hint at their legend on the high seas.

Can I use these in other swashbuckling games?

Yes. The names are original or common real names and fit any swashbuckling, pirate or 17th-century adventure game or story, whatever system you use, and work well in fiction too.
