How the Psychic Name Generator works

This psychic name generator gives telepaths and seers three kinds of name: codenames such as Echo or the Quiet Whisper, mystic stage aliases such as Madame Sybil of Vienna, and the cold test-subject designations of secret programmes such as Subject K-11. Use them for superheroes, spies and supernatural stories.

How the psychic name generator works

A psychic's name depends on who gave it to them. Codenames come from teams and agencies, short words about sound, silence and sight, since telepathy is usually shown as hearing thoughts. Mystic aliases are stage names from the long history of mediums and fortune tellers, a title, a grand first name and sometimes a city. Test subject designations come from laboratories and government programmes, letters and numbers that strip the person away, the way Eleven was named in Stranger Things.

    Real programmes behind the fiction

Governments really did test psychics. The CIA's MKULTRA and the US Army's Stargate Project studied mind control and remote viewing during the Cold War, which is why so many psychic stories involve secret labs. Some designations here borrow the style of those programme names to give your character that history.

    FAQ

What is a good name for a psychic character?

Match the name to their story. A hero on a team suits a short codename like Echo or Whisper, a fortune teller suits a stage name like Madame Sybil, and someone who escaped a lab suits a number they are trying to leave behind.

What is the difference between a telepath and an esper?

A telepath reads or sends thoughts. Esper, from ESP, is a broader term for anyone with psychic powers, including telekinesis, clairvoyance or precognition. Anime and older science fiction use esper often.

Can I use these psychic names in my story?

Yes. The codenames are common words, the mystic aliases are invented, and the programme names are either invented or real historical programmes, which are public history. Check codenames against existing comic characters if you plan to publish.
