How the Random Horoscope Generator works

Choose a star sign and a period, and the random horoscope generator writes a playful horoscope with a line each on love, work and self-care, plus a lucky number and colour. Every horoscope is written at random from a bank of phrases, so press again for a new one. It is entertainment, not a forecast.

Newspaper horoscopes started in 1930, when the Sunday Express in London printed a reading for the newborn Princess Margaret. Readers loved it, and within a decade sun-sign columns ran in papers across Britain and America. This random horoscope generator writes in the same style, and says openly what columns rarely admit: the words are chosen at random.

What each horoscope contains

Part Drawn from
Opening line Your sign's trait and ruling planet, set in the period you chose
Love A bank of relationship lines
Work A bank of career and money lines
Self-care A bank of practical well-being nudges
Lucky number 1 to 49
Lucky colour One of 12 colours
Ruling planet The traditional or modern ruler of your sign

The sign's trait and planet are fixed: Aries is bold and ruled by Mars, Libra fair-minded and ruled by Venus, and so on. Everything else is picked fresh each time with the browser's secure random number generator.

The signs and their rulers

Sign Dates (approx.) Ruler
Aries 21 Mar – 19 Apr Mars
Taurus 20 Apr – 20 May Venus
Gemini 21 May – 20 Jun Mercury
Cancer 21 Jun – 22 Jul The Moon
Leo 23 Jul – 22 Aug The Sun
Virgo 23 Aug – 22 Sep Mercury
Libra 23 Sep – 22 Oct Venus
Scorpio 23 Oct – 21 Nov Pluto
Sagittarius 22 Nov – 21 Dec Jupiter
Capricorn 22 Dec – 19 Jan Saturn
Aquarius 20 Jan – 18 Feb Uranus
Pisces 19 Feb – 20 Mar Neptune

The exact dates shift by a day in some years. Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces show their modern rulers; traditional astrology gives them Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.

Why horoscopes feel accurate

In 1948 the psychologist Bertram Forer gave students a "personality profile" and asked them to rate how well it fitted. They scored it 4.3 out of 5 on average, though every student got the same text, built from horoscope phrases. The Forer, or Barnum, effect is why vague, positive, widely true statements feel personal. Good horoscopes are full of them, and so is this one.

Tips and pitfalls

It is not your real horoscope. No planetary positions are calculated. For where the planets actually were when you were born, use the birth chart calculator.

Do not act on it. Never base money, health or relationship decisions on a horoscope, random or otherwise.

Lucky numbers are just random. Each number from 1 to 49 is drawn fresh, so do not expect it to beat the odds in a lottery.

How to read the result

The first line names the sign and period, followed by the horoscope paragraph. The stats show the lucky number, the lucky colour and the sign's ruling planet.

FAQ

Is this a real horoscope?

No. It is assembled at random from a bank of phrases, with your sign's trait and ruling planet worked in. It is meant for fun, party games and writing, not as a forecast of anything.

Why does the horoscope change every time?

Each press picks new lines for love, work and self-care and a new lucky number and colour. Real newspaper columns are written once per period, but this generator is built to give endless variations.

What is my star sign?

Your sun sign depends on your birth date. Aries runs from about 21 March to 19 April, Taurus from 20 April to 20 May, and so on through Pisces. The zodiac sign calculator gives the exact sign for any date.

Is the lucky number random?

Yes. It is drawn from 1 to 49 each time with the browser's random number generator, so it has no connection to your sign or the stars and no better chance of winning anything.
