How the Tarot Reading Generator works

Pick a spread and press Generate for a tarot reading drawn from the full 78-card deck. Each card comes with its position in the spread and a short upright or reversed meaning. The shuffle uses your browser's secure random numbers, and the reading is offered for fun and reflection.

Tarot began in 15th-century Italy as a card game, and only became a tool for divination in 18th century France. The deck most readers use today is the Rider–Waite–Smith deck of 1909, and its card names and meanings are the ones this tarot reading generator follows.

The 78 cards

Group Cards What they represent
Major Arcana 22, The Fool to The World Big themes and turning points
Wands 14 Energy, ambition, creativity (Fire)
Cups 14 Feelings, love, relationships (Water)
Swords 14 Thoughts, conflict, decisions (Air)
Pentacles 14 Money, work, the body (Earth)

Each suit runs Ace to Ten, then four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King. Readers often say a spread with many Major Arcana cards points to a significant period. In a ten-card spread you would expect about three by chance, since 22 of the 78 cards are Major.

The spreads

Single card. One card as a theme for the day or a quick answer to a question.

Three cards: past, present, future. The classic short reading. The first card is what led here, the second where things stand, the third where they are heading.

Three cards: situation, action, outcome. A practical spread for a decision: what you face, what to do about it, and the likely result.

Celtic Cross. The best-known long spread, with ten positions: present, challenge, foundation, recent past, best outcome, near future, yourself, surroundings, hopes and fears, and outcome. The first six form a cross, the last four a staff alongside it.

How the cards are drawn

The tool shuffles the deck with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by crypto.getRandomValues, the same random source browsers use for encryption keys. Every card is equally likely and no card can appear twice in a reading. With reversals on, each card has an even chance of landing upside down. There are about 4.6 × 10¹⁸ possible ordered Celtic Cross draws before reversals, so you will not see the same reading twice.

Upright and reversed meanings

An upright card carries its usual meaning. A reversed card is usually read as that energy blocked, delayed or turned inward, not simply the opposite. The Tower upright is sudden upheaval; reversed, it is a collapse narrowly avoided or put off. Some readers ignore reversals altogether, so you can switch them off and read every card upright.

Tips for a tarot reading

Ask an open question. "What should I focus on at work?" gets more from the cards than "Will I get the job?"

Read the cards together. Look for repeated suits, a run of court cards or several Majors. Three Cups in a three-card spread puts feelings at the centre, whatever the question.

Do not redraw until you like it. The point of a reading is the reflection it prompts. If a card feels wrong, ask why.

Keep a note. Write down the question and the cards. Looking back after a week or a month is often more revealing than the reading itself, and it shows which cards keep turning up for you.

Keep it in proportion. Tarot has no proven power to predict events. Treat it as a prompt for thinking, never as advice on health, money or legal matters.

How to read the result

Each line shows the position, the card and whether it is reversed, then the meaning for that orientation. The stats count the cards drawn, the Major Arcana among them and, with reversals on, how many came up reversed.

FAQ

Is this tarot reading free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit and nothing to pay. Every reading is drawn in your browser and nothing about your question or your cards is sent anywhere.

What does a reversed tarot card mean?

A reversed card is upside down when drawn. Most readers take it as the card's energy being blocked, delayed or internal rather than its exact opposite. You can turn reversals off if you prefer to read every card upright.

What is the best spread for beginners?

The three-card past, present and future spread. It is short enough to read in a few minutes and shows how the cards relate to each other. Move on to the Celtic Cross once the card meanings feel familiar.

Are the cards truly random?

Yes. The deck is shuffled with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every card and every position is equally likely and the same card never appears twice in one reading.
