How the Auto Chart Maker works

This auto chart maker picks a chart type for your table. Not sure which chart fits your numbers? Paste the table and the page looks at what is in the columns, picks a line, bar, pie or scatter chart, draws it, and tells you in one line why it chose that shape. If you disagree, switch the type from the dropdown and the same data is redrawn. Download the result as SVG or PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

Auto chart maker: what to paste

A header row followed by data rows, separated by commas or tabs, which is what you get from copying cells in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or from opening a CSV in a text editor. The first column is treated as the label, date or x value and the remaining numeric columns as the values. Text columns after the first are ignored.

How the chart is chosen

The rules follow the advice in most charting guides. A first column of dates, or of numbers that rise in order such as years, means the rows are a sequence, so you get a line chart with one line per numeric column. A label column with a single numeric column gives a bar chart, unless there are six or fewer rows of positive values that add up to 100 or 1, in which case they are shares of a whole and a pie is drawn. Two numeric columns over more than a dozen labelled rows are treated as a relationship and plotted as a scatter, with the label in the tooltip. Two or more numeric columns over a short list of categories become grouped bars. A table with no label column and two numeric columns is also a scatter. The stats panel names the chart and the rule that fired.

Overriding the choice

Set Chart type to Line, Bar, Pie or Scatter to force that shape. Line and Bar use every numeric column; Pie uses the first numeric column; Scatter uses the first two numeric columns as x and y. The Why line then reads "chosen by hand" so a screenshot makes clear it was your decision.

When to move to a dedicated maker

This page covers the four everyday shapes with sensible defaults and no styling options beyond the palette and title. When the picked chart is right but you want axis labels, a donut hole, stacked bars, log scales or a smoothed line, open the dedicated maker for that chart from the related tools and paste the same table.

Exporting

Download SVG gives a vector file with editable text. Download PNG renders at one, two or three times the preview width. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard. The data never leaves your browser.

FAQ

It picked a bar chart but I wanted a line

Line is chosen only when the first column is a date or an ordered number. Labels such as Q1, Q2, Q3 or Jan, Feb, Mar are text, so the page cannot tell they are a sequence. Either switch the type to Line by hand or write the dates as 2025-01, 2025-02 and so on.

Why did it not choose a pie?

A pie needs a short list of positive parts that make a whole. If the values do not add up to 100 or 1, or there are more than six rows, a bar chart is clearer, so that is what you get. Force Pie from the dropdown if you know the values are shares.

Can it handle thousands separators or currency?

Plain numbers work best. Values such as 1,200 inside a CSV are read as two columns, so remove thousands separators before pasting, or copy from a spreadsheet where the raw cell value is used. Currency signs make the column text and it will be skipped.

What if there are several text columns?

Only the first column is used as the label. Extra text columns are ignored, so rearrange the table so the label you want to see on the axis comes first.
