How the Black and White Photo works
Make a black and white photo the way film photographers did, by choosing a colour filter that decides which colours turn light and which turn dark, then fine-tuning contrast and brightness for a punchy monochrome image.
How to make a black and white photo
Choose a photo and it turns grey immediately using a neutral mix. Then try the filters. Each one changes how much the red, green and blue parts of the picture count towards the final grey, so the same scene can look soft and flat or bold and dramatic.
What the colour filters do
A red filter darkens blue skies and makes clouds pop, the classic landscape look. Orange and yellow are gentler versions that also smooth skin. A green filter lightens foliage and darkens lips, while a blue filter gives pale, moody skin and bright skies.
Contrast and brightness
Black and white images often need more contrast than colour ones because colour no longer separates objects. Raise Contrast to deepen shadows and brighten highlights, and nudge Brightness to keep detail in the darkest areas.

FAQ
Is black and white the same as grayscale?
In digital terms yes: both mean an image made only of greys. Photographers say black and white because a good conversion is a creative choice of tones, not just removing the colour.
Which filter is best for portraits?
Orange or yellow usually flatter skin because they lighten reddish tones and soften blemishes. Red can look very smooth but sometimes too pale, and green or blue make skin darker and more textured.
Will the result be saved as a grayscale file?
The download is a normal RGB JPG or PNG where all three channels are equal, which every app and printer handles correctly. It looks identical to a single-channel grayscale file.
Can I keep one colour and make the rest black and white?
This tool converts the whole image. For a colour splash look, convert a copy here and blend the two together in a layer-based editor with a mask over the area you want to keep in colour.
