How the Vignette Effect works

This vignette effect darkens the edges and corners of a photo so the eye is drawn to the centre, the same finishing touch photographers add in Lightroom, with control over strength, size, softness, shape and colour.

How to use the vignette effect

Drop in a photo and adjust the sliders. Strength sets how dark the corners become. Clear centre size controls how much of the middle is left untouched, and Softness decides whether the vignette fades in gradually or closes in like a hard ring. Choose Oval to follow the shape of the photo or Circle for an even ring, then download the result.

Dark, white and coloured vignettes

A black vignette is the classic look that adds mood and focus. Set Vignette colour to white for a soft, dreamy fade often used for wedding and baby photos, or pick any other colour to blend the edges into a brand or page background.

Keep it subtle

A vignette works best when nobody notices it. For most photos a strength of 30 to 60 with high softness is enough to guide attention to the subject. Strong, hard vignettes suit dramatic portraits and retro styles rather than everyday shots.

Private by design

The vignette is painted on a canvas in your browser and the photo is never uploaded.

FAQ

What is a vignette in photography?

A vignette is a gradual darkening or lightening towards the edges of a photo. It happens naturally with some lenses and is often added on purpose in editing to frame the subject and pull attention to the centre of the image.

How do I add a white vignette to a photo?

Set Vignette colour to white, raise the strength and keep softness high. The corners fade gently to white, a popular soft look for portraits, product shots and images placed on white web pages.

What is the difference between oval and circle?

Oval stretches the vignette to match the proportions of the photo, so all four edges darken evenly. Circle keeps a perfectly round clear area, which darkens the long sides of a wide photo more than the short ones.

Will the vignette reduce my photo's quality?

No. The photo keeps its pixel size unless it is larger than 2,400 pixels on the long side, and JPGs are saved at high quality. Only the edges are changed, so the subject itself stays exactly as sharp.
