How the Camera Framing Guide works

This camera framing guide draws composition guides over your live webcam: a rule of thirds grid, a centre cross, title-safe boxes and crop masks for vertical, square and cinema shapes. Use it to set up your seat, light and camera height before a call, stream or recording. Nothing is uploaded.

Good framing is the cheapest upgrade a webcam can get. Raising the camera to eye level and placing your eyes on the top third line makes a call look deliberate rather than accidental, with no new equipment.

How the camera framing guide works

Start camera shows your webcam on a canvas, mirrored by default so moving feels natural. The guides you pick are drawn on top every frame. A crop darkens everything outside the chosen shape, and the grid and safe areas then fit inside that shape, so you frame for the format you will publish. Every setting applies instantly.

The guides

Crop shapes

Crop Where it is used
9:16 TikTok, Reels, Shorts and Stories
1:1 Square feed posts and some video call tiles
4:5 Portrait Instagram and Facebook feed posts
4:3 Older displays, some meeting rooms and presentation layouts
2.39:1 Widescreen cinema look

A vertical crop from a landscape webcam uses only the middle third of the width, so you need to sit centred and closer to the edges of that strip than you might expect.

Tips and pitfalls

Camera at eye level. A laptop on a desk looks up your nose. Raise it on books until the lens is level with your eyes and the top thirds line sits across them.

Leave headroom, but not too much. A small gap above your head is right. If the top third of the frame is empty wall, move the camera down or sit closer.

Mirrored view, real output. Call apps often show you mirrored but send the true image. Switch View to Normal to check that text and logos behind you read correctly.

How to read the result

When your eyes sit on the top third line, your head is inside the safe box and the crop holds your whole face, the shot is framed. Snapshot saves the frame with guides for reference.

FAQ

Where should my eyes be on a webcam?

On or just below the top third line, about a third of the way down the picture. That leaves a little space above your head and shows your shoulders, which looks natural and confident on a call or in a recording.

What are safe areas?

Margins inside the frame where important things are guaranteed to show. TVs may crop the edges, and social apps cover them with buttons and captions. Keeping faces and text inside the 90% box keeps them visible everywhere the video ends up.

Does this change what my call app sends?

No. The guides only appear on this page. Use them to set your seat, camera height and light, then close the tab and join your call; the framing you set up carries over because the camera has not moved.

Is my camera picture uploaded?

No. The live view and guides are drawn by your own browser and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. A snapshot only leaves the page if you press Download, and then it goes straight to your device.
