How the Candlestick Chart Maker works
This candlestick chart maker draws OHLC price series. A candlestick chart shows a price series one period at a time: each candle has a body from the open to the close and a thin wick from the low to the high, coloured by whether the period closed up or down. Paste rows of date, open, high, low and close, exported from a broker, spreadsheet or price API, and the page draws the candles, adds a volume strip if you have a volume column, and lets you download the chart as SVG or PNG. Nothing is uploaded.
Candlestick chart maker: writing the rows
The first line is a header and each following line is one period. The first column is the date or period label; the next four are open, high, low and close in that order, though the page also matches columns by name so Close,Open,High,Low in any order works when the header says which is which. A column starting with vol is used for the volume strip. Currency signs and thousands separators are stripped. Tabs work in place of commas, so a block copied from a spreadsheet or a CSV download pastes straight in.
Reading a candle
The body runs from the open to the close. A candle in the second palette colour closed higher than it opened; one in the first palette colour closed lower. The wick shows the full range traded in the period, so a long wick with a short body means the price moved a lot but ended close to where it started. Hover any candle to read the four prices and the volume.
Candle styles
Filled draws every body solid. Hollow up leaves rising candles white with a coloured outline, the convention many trading platforms use so up and down periods can be told apart in greyscale. OHLC bars replace the body with a vertical range line, a left tick for the open and a right tick for the close, the older style found in newspapers and technical analysis texts.
Volume strip
When a volume column is present and the strip is on, a row of bars under the candles shows how much traded in each period, coloured the same way as the candle above. Turn it off for a cleaner chart or when the volume column is missing.
Exporting
Download SVG gives a vector file with the axis text editable, ready for Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma. Download PNG renders at one, two or three times the preview width. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard. Everything is drawn in your browser; the prices never leave your machine.
FAQ
How many periods fit?
Any number, but the candles get thinner as rows are added and become slivers past about a hundred. For a longer history, resample to weekly or monthly rows first, or export at a wider PNG size so each candle keeps a few pixels.
Why does the page reject a row?
Each row must have all four prices, and the high must be at least the larger of open and close while the low must be at most the smaller. A row that breaks that rule is reported with its line number, since it usually means the columns are in a different order than the header says.
Are the dates plotted to scale?
No. Each period gets an equal slot in order, so weekends and holidays leave no gaps, which is how trading charts are normally drawn. Date labels are thinned out so they do not overlap.
Can I use it for something other than stocks?
Yes. Anything with an open, high, low and close per period works: currency rates, crypto, commodity prices, or even daily temperature with first, max, min and last readings.
