How the Floor Plan 3D Preview works

This floor plan 3D preview turns room sizes into a model. Type one room per line as a name and four numbers, the x and y position of its corner and its width and depth in metres, and this page builds the plan in 3D with a coloured floor and walls for every room and a label above each one. Orbit it to see how the rooms fit together, make the walls see-through to look inside, and read the total floor area, footprint and wall area from the rail before drawing a proper plan or ordering materials.

Floor plan 3D preview: describing the rooms

Each line is name, x, y, width, depth. The x and y are the position of the room's top-left corner on the plan, measured to the right and downward from any origin you like, and width and depth are its size along those two directions, all in metres. Rooms that share a wall should share an edge: the default kitchen starts at x = 5, exactly where the 5 metre living room ends. Commas, semicolons or tabs separate the fields, so a column pasted from a spreadsheet works, and lines that start with # are ignored, which is handy for notes. A room with a bad or missing number is reported by line and skipped while the rest still draw. Rooms may overlap or float apart; the page draws exactly what you give it, so gaps and overlaps are easy to spot from above.

Walls and height

Every room gets four walls of the chosen height and thickness centred on its edges, so where two rooms meet the two walls coincide and read as one. Wall height is the ceiling height, 2.4 to 2.7 metres in most houses, and the wall thickness is only visual. There are no doors or windows; the tool is for checking proportions and adjacency, not for producing construction drawings. See-through walls make the layout legible from any angle and are the better choice for a screenshot of a plan with many small rooms; switching walls off leaves only the coloured floors, which is the clearest view straight down.

What the rail reports

Total floor area is the sum of every rectangle, given in square metres and square feet. The footprint is the overall width and depth of the bounding box around all rooms, which is the size of the site or the slab they need. Wall length adds the perimeter of every room, so shared walls are counted from both sides, which is the figure you want for skirting, plaster or paint on both faces; wall area multiplies that by the height and ignores openings. Each room's own label shows its dimensions and area.

Using it with other tools

Once the layout is right, the individual room areas feed the flooring and paint calculators, the wall height and area go into the room volume tool for heating and ventilation, and the PNG download gives you a quick perspective view to attach to a message or a listing.

FAQ

Which way is x and y?

x runs to the right across the plan and y runs down it, the same as a drawing on paper read from the top-left. In the 3D view north is not implied; orbit to whichever angle suits.

Can I use feet?

Enter feet as the numbers and read the areas as square feet: the rail's metric labels will be wrong, but the geometry and the proportions are unchanged. Converting to metres first is simpler, at 0.3048 metres per foot.

How do I make an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles with the same name that share an edge. The wall between them is drawn, which is a limitation of the rectangle approach; set walls to see-through or off to read it as one space. The areas of the two parts add correctly in the total.

Can I add a second storey?

Not in one scene. Draw each floor as its own list and compare the screenshots, or give upstairs rooms an offset x position so both floors sit side by side.
