How the Voxel Art Editor works
This voxel editor online builds models from cubes. A voxel editor is the 3D cousin of a pixel-art editor: instead of colouring squares you place cubes. Click on the ground or on an existing block to add a cube in the chosen colour, hold Shift to remove one, hold Alt to repaint, and orbit around the model as it grows. Save your work as a small .json, export the model as OBJ or PLY for a game engine or 3D printer, or download a PNG render. Everything stays in your browser.
Voxel editor online: building
The workspace is a 16 by 16 by 16 grid, enough for a character, a tree, a small building or an icon. Move the pointer over the ground or a block face and a ghost cube shows where the next block will go; click to place it. Shift-click removes the block under the pointer and Alt-click repaints it with the current colour. Drag with the left button to orbit, scroll to zoom and right-drag to pan; a click only places a block if the pointer has not moved, so orbiting never leaves stray cubes behind. The grid can be hidden for renders.
Colour
The colour picker sets the colour of the next block placed or painted. Any number of colours can be used in one model; each becomes a material in the OBJ export and a vertex colour in the PLY export. Pick from the swatches in your browser's picker or type a hex value.
Saving and reloading
Save .json writes a compact list of blocks and colours. Drop that file back onto the page at any time to carry on where you left off; it is the only format the editor reads. Clear all empties the grid and Reset returns to the sample house.
Exporting
Download OBJ + MTL produces a Wavefront model with one material per colour, the format that Blender, Unity, Godot and most 3D printing slicers open directly. Download PLY writes an ASCII PLY with per-vertex colours, which is what MeshLab and many scanners use. Both exports contain only the outer faces of the model, so hidden faces between neighbouring blocks are left out and the files stay small. Download PNG renders the current view at up to 4K for a thumbnail or a sprite.
Limits
The grid is fixed at 16 cubes a side and there is no undo beyond removing a block. It is meant for quick models and icons rather than large scenes; for those, use a desktop voxel program and bring the OBJ here to view it.
Privacy
The model lives in the page and in the files you download. Nothing is uploaded and the editor works offline once loaded.
FAQ
How do I remove or recolour a block?
Hold Shift and click a block to remove it; hold Alt and click to repaint it in the current colour. The ghost cube turns red over a block that is about to be removed.
Can I save my model and come back later?
Yes. Save .json downloads a small file listing every block and its colour. Drop it onto the page later and the model is rebuilt exactly. Keep that file; the OBJ and PLY exports cannot be reloaded into the editor.
Which export should I use?
OBJ with its MTL file for Blender, game engines and 3D printing, where per-colour materials are convenient. PLY for MeshLab, point-cloud tools and anything that wants vertex colours in a single file.
Why do I sometimes place a block when I meant to orbit?
A click places a block only if the pointer moves less than a few pixels between press and release. Start the drag with a definite movement and no block is added; Shift-click any stray cube to remove it.
