FPS Converter
Convert 60fps to 30fps or Other Frame Rates Without Changing Speed or Length
OneTask is free, with no sign-up, and built by one person.
If this tool saved you time, a coffee helps keep new ones coming.
How the FPS Converter works
This FPS converter changes how many frames per second a video has without speeding it up or slowing it down. Pick the new frame rate, press Render and download. The clip keeps its length and sound, and the conversion happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
Frame rate is how many still pictures a video shows each second. Phones often record at 60 fps, cinema uses 24, European TV uses 25 and most web video is 30. Mixing rates in one edit causes stutter, and a higher rate than you need doubles the work for every encoder after it.
How the FPS converter works
The tool first watches about 20 frames of your video to estimate its current rate. It then plays the clip through once in real time. A canvas is redrawn only when the clock enters a new slot of the target rate, such as every 1/24 second, and the canvas is recorded at that rate along with the original audio.
Going down, frames that fall between slots are dropped. Going up, the latest frame is held for extra slots. This is how most editors convert by default. Nothing is blended or invented, so the motion is clean but a higher rate will not look smoother than the source.
Common conversions
| From | To | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 60 | 30 | Halve the frames for web upload or older devices |
| 30 | 24 | Match a film-style edit |
| 30 | 25 | PAL broadcast or a European edit |
| 30 | 15 | Small screen recordings and tutorials |
| 24 | 12 | A choppy, stop-motion look |
Tips and pitfalls
Use a rate that divides evenly. 60 to 30 drops every other frame and stays perfectly smooth. 30 to 24 drops one frame in five, which can show a slight judder on slow pans.
Up-converting does not add smoothness. 30 to 60 doubles each frame. It is only worth doing to match a 60 fps timeline. Real interpolation needs desktop software that invents new frames.
Keep the tab in front. The render plays in real time. A background tab is throttled and drops frames.
How to read the result
The stats show the measured source rate, the new rate, the clip length and the new file size. The source rate is an estimate from a few frames; variable frame rate phone clips can read slightly off a round number.
FAQ
Does changing the frame rate change the length of the video?
No. The video plays at the same speed and keeps the same length and sound. Only the number of pictures shown each second changes. To make a video play faster or slower, use the video speed changer instead.
Can I convert 30 fps to 60 fps?
You can, but each frame is shown twice, so motion looks the same as before. True 60 fps smoothness needs frame interpolation, which creates new in-between pictures; that is done by desktop tools such as video editors with optical flow.
What frame rate should I use for YouTube or social media?
Use the rate the video was recorded at whenever you can. If you must change it, 30 fps suits most web and social uploads, 24 gives a film look, and 25 matches European broadcast standards.
Is my video uploaded to change its frame rate?
No. The video is played, redrawn and recorded by your browser on your device. It is never sent to a server, so the conversion works for private footage and even after you go offline.
