How the Funnel Chart Maker works

This funnel chart maker shows drop-off between stages. A funnel chart shows how many people or items make it through each stage of a process: visitors to buyers, applicants to hires, leads to closed deals. Each stage is a band whose width is proportional to its count, so the drop-offs are visible at a glance. Paste rows of stage and count, choose a tapered funnel or centred bars, pick whether labels show the percentage of the first stage or of the previous one, and download SVG or PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

Funnel chart maker: writing the rows

The first line is a header and each line after it is one stage: a name, a comma, a count. List the stages from the top of the funnel to the bottom, in the order things happen. Counts can carry thousands separators. Tabs are accepted in place of commas, so two columns copied from a spreadsheet or analytics export paste straight in. Percent signs are stripped, so a column of percentages works too; the first stage is then 100.

Tapered or bars

The tapered shape draws each stage as a trapezium whose top edge matches its own count and whose bottom edge matches the next stage, so the outline narrows continuously like a real funnel. The bars shape draws each stage as a centred rectangle with a gap between them, which is easier to read when the numbers are close together or when you want to compare the widths precisely. Both use one palette colour per stage.

Labels and percentages

Count only prints the figure in each band. Percent of first adds how much of the top stage survives to this point, which is the usual conversion rate. Percent of previous shows the step-to-step rate, which is the better view for finding where the process leaks. When a band is too narrow to hold its label, the text moves to the right of the band in dark ink. Hovering any band shows all three figures, and that text is kept in the SVG.

Reading the stats

The stats under the chart give the top and bottom counts, the overall conversion from first stage to last, and the stage with the biggest step-to-step drop. That last figure is often the whole point of the exercise: the stage where the most people leave is where a fix pays off most.

Exporting

Download SVG gives a vector file with the stage names as editable text, ready for Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma, or for dropping into a deck. Download PNG renders at one, two or three times the preview width. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard. Everything is drawn in your browser; the counts never leave your machine.

FAQ

Do the stages have to decrease?

No. A stage larger than the one before it simply draws wider, and its percent of previous is over 100%. Funnels normally shrink, but the chart does not enforce it, so a stage that gains from another source is shown honestly.

Can I use percentages instead of counts?

Yes. Paste percentages with or without the sign and the first stage should be 100. The labels then read as percentages of the top, and percent of previous still computes the step rate.

How many stages can I add?

As many as you like; the drawing grows taller so every band stays readable. Funnels with more than about eight stages are hard to read, so consider grouping small steps together.

Why did my label jump outside the band?

Narrow bands at the bottom of the funnel cannot hold the count and percentage, so the text sits to the right of the band instead. Switch to Count only for a shorter label or use the bars shape for a little more room.
